ATI Radeon 5650 Low FPS and high MS

The above title says it all. Homefront I get 30 fps on absolute lowest settings (I refuse to set the resolution down from 1600by900 it's horrible below it). Most games run so so on medium settings getting like 30 fps but I noticed in Call of Duty 4 (a 4 year old game) that on the absolute lowest settings I get between 45-60 fps, on ultra from 20-35... I mean on lowest isn't it supposed to be 100 fps plus? Look at the benchmarks here

1st gen i5 460M @2.53 Ghz

8gb ram

ati mobility radeon 5650 & Intel GMA HD (and use, its using the ati card NOT the GMA)

Windows 7 Home 64 bit

Please help. I know this isn't the best graphics card but its supposed to be a mid level graphics card and should at least run COD4 on ultra with 35 fps+ at all times.

Maybe something I should play round with in the Catalyst? I have all settings on factory defaults at the moment, latest drivers as well (Catalyst 11.12)

Edit: Something might be wrong with my computer. I tried to see how my GMA would respond, COD4 has fps of 5 on lowest settings, counter strike source has 15 on lowest settings and a few months ago when I last checked it had 70+fps on CSS... so something might be affecting both cards, in windows 7 control panel I have it set on full performance though...

Who's to say its your graphics card? Lack or ram or under powered cpu can cause low FPS.
Your computer is only as powerful as the slowest component.

It could well be your GPU but you could have had a ram stick die, and or windows updates now require more system resources so hence its struggling.

Task manager shows the 8 gb ram doing fine, dual core in task manager is far from overloaded. I do not think its one of those things.

well as badger said it could be a number of things

The card is already kinda of weak and weaker being the mobile version


The low fram drop could also be lack of updating firmware or various updates that the computer needs have you checked all updates latley not all updates will be done through WIN 7

Also if OC'ing the card does no good it could be the card is dying from lack of ventalation remember heat is the number one enemy of components it being a laptop

I wouldn't be surprised that it is suffering from heat issues and lack of air flow

so if there's not enough cooling, the card automatically slows down then?
my cooling pad broke so I've not been using one for a while, probably should get a new one then

so if the graphics card does not have enough cooling, it will automatically slow down because it's programmed to so it doesn't overheat and burn the card, yes?

not true heat can make it work harder and cause it to burn out if the fan is working properly you would hear it increase as a sign that it is getting to hot

just because task manager says theres 8gb ram doesnt mean its working, its just detected.
