i5-2500k vs i7-2600k and DRAM compatibility

I'm planning to upgrade my PC to a better one.
I currently planning to buy this motherboard

many says i5-2500k is almost the same as the i7-2600k. except for the HT and extra
4 cores.

is it worth it the $100 for the i7?

and.. is the DRAM 2200MHz compatible with i5 and i7?.

My usage is these:
Photoshop
some video encoding
Internet
PS2 Emulation
extreme gaming. hehehe

and.. is that board good for overclocking both CPUs?
and, when is the best time to buy? (like tentative price drop).

Basically they are both the same. Both have 4 cores, the i7-2600K is clocked 100mhz faster and has hyperthreading that the 2500K does not. Ram compatability is the same, it is the board that is the determining factor. As far as the motherboard, you will have to read the reviews to decide for yourself, a good place is Newegg.

You'll benefit from the hyperthreading when video encoding or photo editing. But you'll see minimal difference in gaming, as few games optimise the added cores.
Worth the money.. Well hard to say, an SSD would be a better purchase if you were asking me, then spending the extra on the CPU.

2000mhz ram is overkill at best, it makes very little difference in day to day tasks and will make minimal difference else where, certainly not in gaming. I run my 1866mhz ram at 1333mhz lol as I cba to increase my ram voltage.. Lazy I know!

then having ram that is higher than 1333 is not worth it? so does will make minimal / unnoticeable diferences? having 2200 is not recommended?

for renders. How much time will HT's advantage than non-HT?

can't see some benches.

main usage is photoshop. gaming is just for happy hour.

when is the best time to buy? is the Ivy bridge much much better than the SB? is it recommended to buy the IB instead?

Ivy bridge will be very very expensive! Look at the price of esb! 2011 socket seems too over priced.

I don't think you'd notice much difference at all with 1333mhz ram or faster in photoshop, difference will be minimal. Get 1866, its the happy medium.
Still rather get an ssd than the i7 over i5

yeah. i noticed that too. not much of an upgrade from SB.

they just want new range of products. then having i7 is not recommended.

I'd expect the heat to be very close to each other. Too close to worry about. The 2500k is a great overclocker and a favorite choice for gaming. Your best move is to buy the 2500k and use the saved money for some other purpose----SSD, better monitor, new case, whatever.

The 2600k might be a better choice if you don't care about the price difference, need hyperthreading, or live and die by benchmarks.

If you aren't going to overclock, you can do without a K model.

just wanna be sure to pick the right move. since my money is not that abundant. haha. Does HT pose noticeable diference? if not. I'm really going to buy the 2500k. which board is better overclocker? p67 or other chipset for 1155?

I linked to your board in the 2nd post of this thread. Read the reviews. The Z68has some advantages over the P67, but only a few. It has SSD assist for hard drives, which I don't need and won't use. Personally, I would rather have a gen. 3 P67 board. The gen 3 boards have pcie 3.0 which doubles the bandwidth for capable GPU cards. Both AMD and Nvidia are supposed to be coming out with a new line of cards in the next few months. Rumor has it that they will be pcie 3 cards.

was there gen 3 the same as b3? can't see a gen3 p67 board on asus(brand of choice). i can only see a z68 gen3. if the only advantage of p67 gen3 is pcie3, i don't think evga gtx570 sc(my vga card choice) is pcie3.

It isn't. But, the new cards supposedly will be released in a few months, and according to rumors, are going to be pcie 3. Just a little future proofing, that's all.

As fate would have it, I've been looking into Intel for a few days. I've come to the conclusion if I could, I'd go with an i5 2xxxK and the P67 chipset. My reasoning is it ain't that much different than the high dollar i7's and has very good overclocking capabilities. I'd do it with the socket 1155 too since it supports the new 2nd gen Core series and will likely be around longer than the 1156 and 1366.

As to RAM, as was said you'll see little difference between 1366 and 2100 except maybe in Photoshop. But if it is installed on a SSD bought with money saved on high-dollar RAM and a CPU, you'll get a much bigger bang.
