Solved Is this little white border always around the active icon?

ive had that before , i dont remember how i stopped it, but if you click your taskbar you take the focus of it.

Restarting the computer will sometimes clear it.

Try going to Windows Classic and then changing it back to Windows Aero.

Or Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Settings > Adjust for best appearance.

But yes it is the active Icon.

Do you mean "active" icon? The recycle bin doesn't seem like it would be "active", certainly not with your desktop background showing as it does.

With my Aero desktop I do NOT have a background specified. Rather, I have "solid color". When I pass the mouse over any desktop shortcut icon it lights up, but not bright. If I single-click on a desktop shortcut icon it lights up brighter, and remains lit up brightly even when I move the mouse to another icon so that the second icon lights up not-bright.

Here's an example showing (a) selected icon for MP3Tag, lit up brightly and surrounded by that outline you point to, (b) mouse hovered over VLC, light up non-bright and also surrounded by that outline, and (c) two other nearby icons not lit up at all and just on the solid-color desktop.

Your situation which includes a desktop background appears to be handled slightly differently by Windows, in that there is nothing inside of the white outline whereas in my solid color desktop the interior area of my selected icon is lit up.



I don't think there's anything wrong with either your or my setup. Perfectly normal I would think, if you select an icon.

I rebooted, it went away. the usual fix!

Yes, I'm noticing the same dotted white line surrounding the "previously selected" icon. I don't recall seeing this before (see previous post showing an example). Have tried a restart and have checked "Advanced System Performance" options in control panel.

Many thanks to the one that SOLVE the issue. I'll keep messing with it and post should I find a answer.

Ok all, not sure what happened. But, the issue has ceased to be. Perhaps it went away when I was playing/switching between themes listed in personalization.

I think your problem is the Focus Rectangle
