I have acquired a new WD 2 TB Sata HD (WD2002FAEX) which is supposedly a Sata 3 drive (backward compatible with Sata 2). When I attempt to initialize this drive via Disk Management function in Computer Management, it see's the drive but shows only 1TB rather than the whole 2 TB capacity, and I have found no way to make it see the entire drive capacity. I am aware that MBR initialization cannot be used with drives EXCEEDING 2TB, which I do not think has anything to do with the stated problem. Using an Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard with latest BIOS. Hoping someone has already experienced this same phenomena and resolved it. Looking for any solutions or suggestions.

Go to western digital's site and grab their disk testing utilities.

...just to make sure it's not a screwy hdd before continuing.

Usually when hdd's fail it happens right out of the box or only after a few months. Usually if you pass that marker you are good for years.

Problem solved

Thanks for you reply, which got me to thinking again! I had installed the new drive on an external USB device. But, when I reinstalled said drive as a secondary drive on the computer itself, full capacity was seen and reported, then was able to format successfully. Thanks.

Just FYI but you might want to see if there's a BIOS update addressing large hard drives for your board. A lot of older MB's need BIOS updates to deal with 2+ TB drives. Not that your MB is that old but....
