Sony VAIO VGN CR220E Ultimate 32 bit VGA CAM DVD Mass Storage undetect

I have spent weeks trying to fix this and am ready to admit I need help that isn't anywhere online.

First of all let me make a contribution: Do not do a clean install of Windows 7 on a VAIO with built in recovery discs because they will no longer be detected and you will not ever be able to use them again.

Here's a list of my most pressing problems:

1. I use to be able to connect my laptop to a display with VGA just with the Fn key. Now I can't and there is a new Intel TV Wizard and Windows Media Center to deal with. The Wizard does not even list VGA in it's connections and the WMC does but does not detect it is connected. The funny thing is a I can connect a terrible S Video cable with the Wizard no problem.

2. CD/DVD drive is not working. I have read everything online and had remote assistance to no avail. The funny thing is I had it briefly working with a Vista drive installed in compatibility mode but then Windows blocked the driver. The drive will open from my computer and will run but the DVD will not be detected. 7 does not appear to like to detect things. I also noticed in the Device Manage the Mass Storage Controller is missing and will not update.

3. The built in recovery discs are not detected. Would have been nice to restore it to OE even with Vista at this point.

4. The built in web cam is not working.

Thanks for having this forum and I would appreciate help from anyone who can relate.

Hi, go here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNCR220E&template_id=1®ion_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

Pick Win 7 as OS from drop down menu, in the menu below click on Motherboard: here are your chipset drivers (should sort out storage controller and maybe dvd!)

Then click on Notebook Control and Utilities: Here are your sony utilities to control function keys etc, I am not sure if you need all three applications  maybe a forum member with a sony laptop could advise!

Hope this helps :).

mmmmm now my DVD is missing from the Device Manager and isn't listed as a drive which was D. I did notice that the Vista Notebook utilities is 10 times larger download so I'm going to try that in compatibility mode now.

Sorry to hear the drivers didn't do as expected :( it is possible however to do a driver roll-back in device manager to get your dvd drive back, I assume it was the chipset driver at fault?

Have a read here: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

If this was my machine the install would have been nuked by now and started afresh  however this may not be an option for you .

I have to admit I have found win 7 to be the easiest and most reliable OS I have used (Win 95, Win98/98Se, Win ME, Win Xp, Win 7 beta and finally Win 7

), from installation to updating and driver installs even in compatibility mode .

Sony are also a nightmare with their different versions of the same model of Pc. especially for finding drivers :sarc:

My personal preference is to identify the components in a laptop/desktop and go direct to the chipset/controllers etc manufacturer and d/load their latest drivers ;)(doesn't always give you full functionality if OEM has modded said components)

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you :( maybe a more knowledgeable forum member can assist you in your quest!.
