Having Trouble saving Favorites inside Favorites

Good morning,

As usual after 69 years on God's green earth I still mess up things without really trying.

I recently bought an HP p7-1157c computer with Win 7 installed. Somehow while I was moving files around I have created a problem with saving sites to individual folders inside my Favorites.

I can save something to the Favorites folder itself but NOT to any other folder inside the actual Favorties Folder.

From reading similar posts on this forum I think it has something to do with the Links folder. When I go to C:/users it has two folders. (Phil and Public)

The Phil folder has a 'yellow' lock on the folder icon. When I open the folder it shows a shortcut to Links as one of the entries. When I click on the Links short cut it shows:

Desktop
Downloads
Recent Places

When I open the Public folder it has about 9 folders one of which is called 'CyberLink' but it is empty.

Like the dummy I am I have been moving files around but for the life of me I can't tell you now what they were or where I moved them too.

I am hoping I can solve this without having to do a system restore. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Hi Phil, navigate to C:\Users\your user-name\Favorites there you should see your favorites and folders inside it.
Alternatively, in your browser's menu bar, click on Favorites, a window will open with 'Add to favorites', clicking on that will opens another window giving you options of where to save it. Also you can pick a folder you have made or create, and ma,e, a new folder. :)

Hi Britton30,

I think you are missing my point. Inside my Favorites folder I have about 20 sub-folders like Cards, Medical, Goodies, etc.

My problem is I can't save a site directly to one of the sub-folders anymore. I have to first save it to the main Favorite folder and then move it to the appropriate sub-folder.

To be honest I don't remember if I have saved to a sub-folder since I got this new Win 7 but I did it all the time with XP.

Thanks and regards,

When you shift folders around in Windows Seven they will not necessarily work in a new location unless you first took ownership of them and thereby created "permission" for the changes. If you were used to XP this is something entirely new!

Download the suggested modification from the tutorial link, and "take ownership" of the folders in question.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html

You may need to be logged in as administrator, depending upon how your machine is set up.

This should resolve the issue you have :)

Morning Qdos and Imperfect1,

I appreciate both of you taking the time to offer assistance.

Imperfect1: I checked out: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18583-user-folders-restore-default-location.html and I have one main question.

If I chose this option does that mean that my Libraries would be COMPLETELY restored to the way they were when I got the computer? In otherwords, does it mean that all the folders I have moved around since getting this new computer would either be removed ( meaning the ones {favorites, contacts, etc} I had imported from my previous XP system) and the ones originally on Win7 would be restored to their rightful folder?

Qdos: My dilemma with your suggestion is I really don't know which folder I should actually 'take ownership' of to solve my not being able to save sites to a folder inside my Favorites folder?

I apologize to both of you for what must seem like stupid questions but I would hate to make things any worse than I think they are right now.

What I would really like to accomplish is to restore all the Libraries to their original Win7 state before I put my 69-year-old 'know-nothing' fingers on them.

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Just the user library folders you're unable to access.

C:\users\phil

If you haven't got these folders in the default location, or have moved them without taking ownership (including the favorites bookmarks folder & sub-folders) then even Internet Explorer won't be able to save or organise your bookmarks.

Hope that helps :)

Qdos,

I did as you said and added the command 'Take Ownership' to my context menu and tried it on Favorites, rebooted, but still can't save a site directly to one of my sub-folders inside my Favorites.

I notice when I right click on Libraries I have the option to 'Restore default libraries'. If I chose this option would it put my libraries back to their original state when I bought the computer? If so, do you think this would solve my problem?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Were you logged onto your PC with administrator rights?

It ought to fix the issue if so, even if those folders were imported from elsewhere, and regardless of where they are.

Personally I force Windows to locate my libraries on a 2nd physical drive, but if they'll fit in the default location (mine won't) there's no reason to not have them there.

I may be wrong here, but I don't think you can save plain text as a favorite. As I said it has to be lnk file, or in the case of a webpage, a .htm file, like below. Note, this is just a picture, not the .htm file.

Normally I go to Windows Explorer to rearrange (organize) and view my Favorites. But for saving a new favorite, I open the page I want to save in IE8, push on the Favorites button (the one with the star on it), then click on the "Add to Favorites button" (the one with the star and the green "+" over it). In the "Create in" pop up there is a drop down list of all your existing folders so you can choose where to save the current page. There is also a "New Folder" button to add a folder to any existing folder as a subfolder.

If its not working right, you can try a reset of IE: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset.

Hi roncerr and all,

I just discovered something that works for me while surfing around this afternoon. Go to the following link and scroll down to 'retired geek's" response to Don.H. I just post it in case anyone else moved their favorites from an older system to Win7 like I did. Retired Geeks solution worked like a Charm.

IE8 won't save to folder in favorites | Windows Secrets Lounge

Thanks to everyone who offered me any suggestions. It was appreciated.

You should be able to do it as described in that link, but you should also be able to do it as both I and Britton suggested here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers...g-favorites-inside-favorites.html#post1710627
http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers...favorites-inside-favorites-2.html#post1712771
So if the above described methods don't work for you I'd do a reset of IE as mentioned in my post.

Britton30: thanks

roncerr: I really appreciate your advice but as far as I know everything else except the ability to save Favorites the way you and Britton suggested is working fine.

I had saved my Favorites from my old computer running WinXP3 and for all I know that might be part of the problem (according to the link from the other forum I posted there are others having the same problem).

So ... since I am not that computer savvy .... I guess I had better leave well-enough alone ...lol

Thanks and regards,
