Hello. I created an account just to enquire about this problem. It's been bugging me for the past few days and spoiling my Christmas mood :p

Software problems forced a repair installation to my computer, and I've been unable to reinstall SP1 since. Ended up doing a clean install. Now SP1 remains the only update that will not install. (Everything else installs just fine.)

I've tried to install SP1 using both Windows Update as well as a direct download from the Microsoft website, but both are unsuccessful, even with a clean boot.

Description of both errors
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Update (I have tried this for umpteenth times :()

I've attached the CBS log and CheckSUR, just in case.

Any help will be appreciated :)

Hello, and welcome to the Seven Forums!

Thanks for providing such a detailed first post. That saves us a lot of work :)

This first step is not a fix, just some further diagnosis, because you have a serious corruption there. Basically, you have what appears at first glance to be a Servicing Stack corruption. The Servicing Stack is right at the very, very heart of Windows Update, and all servicing operations (eg Windows Update and the Windows Installer at the very top rely on it to perform the core servicing, using the Component Servicing Infrastructure (CSI) at the bottom, and Component Based Servicing (CBS) as the middle man). This is incredibly simplistic, and actually not particularly accurate when you get into true detail, but detailed enough for now.

OTLI.gif
OTL - Download or alternative link here and here

Please Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
/md5start
smiengine.dll
CntrtextInstaller.dll
wmicmiplugin.dll
/md5stop
  • Click the None button, followed by Run Scan button. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it here.
Also, what sort of backups do you have? Although my fixes have never yet gone wrong, there is always a small risk, and so we must play safe. Please can you back up all your important data now, and confirm that you have done so, to prepare for the very worst case scenario.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Hmm, the only sort of backup I am able to do is onto another separate HDD (I don't have any external hard drives :p). However, the computer is mostly for leisure and casual use so important data is pretty much negligible.

Most of the files that I intend to keep are already on another HDD separate from the drive the OS is installed on (they're Drives D and E, just FYI).

Hi! Just thought I'd give an update since this thread was getting old.

The computer itself works fine, and all the other essential updates install perfectly. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 remains the only update that won't install. And it's the only update to not install every single time.

While it's not a necessity to fix this, previous posts show that letting the problem stay will probably cause problems with future updates, so any help will be appreciated :))
