Blue ray drive behaving strangely

Hello all. First post, but I've visited this forum for advice many times in the past.

So my blue ray drive is giving me problems. When I insert any type of disk and double click on the drive, I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.". When I right click and open the autoplay menu, it comes up; but when i select an option nothing happens.

To get it to run whatever files are on the disk, I have to right click the drive, select open, and double click the file itself.

I am on the only Windows account on this computer, which is an administrator account. My file associations seem fine, and I tried reinstalling the drive to no avail. I am stuck here.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused a problem is change the drive letter. I am not sure if that is when it stopped working though.

Changing a drive letter is fine, but if its been changed to a letter of a drive you regularly use will cause issues be it a usb hard drive or a pen drive. Change it to something further down the alphabet and see what happens. X or Z should do

Well I changed it to drive B:. My hard drives are setup on C:, D:, and E:, and a virtual drive on Z:. It shouldn't be conflicting with anything. I will swap it around and see if it does anything though.

No, A and B are usually reserved for floppy drives - I am not sure whether these can be used. Safe to change the drive letter to Y. (My drive letters are X-Virtual Clone drive, Y -DVD-RW drive and Z - BD-RE drive.)

Well I switched the drive letter around a couple times (to X: and F: ) and the problem persists. Any other ideas?

Can you recollect when this problem started?

Have you installed any drive-related software recently like burning software?

When did you install the virtual drive? Could it have a bearing on this problem?

Have you installed any anti-virus, anti-malware programs recently?

Check whether any system restore to a previous date can resolve this issue, keeping the above in mind.

Well the computer is less than a month old. I have no system restore points setup to try. I did recently (within the week) install Cyberlink Media Suite, but once again I am not sure if that is when the problem arose. I have had avast antivirus installed since I first installed Windows on the system.

This is more of an annoyance that a true problem, but I would really like to get it fixed. To restate, everything works fine when I use files from the disk while browsing the cd. It just does not work when double clicking the drive or going through autoplay.

Maybe when I double click on it, the target it tries to initialize is wrong? A registry problem perhaps? I have done a touch of registry editing to tweak windows for SSD use, so maybe I inadvertently created the issue while doing that.

Just right click on the drive icon in My Computer and click on Eject. Does the tray open? If so your target is right on target . ( And then the problem is elsewhere)

Yup, eject works just fine. I'm at a loss.

I am sure that you may have many System Restore points a) after the updates b) when you installed Cyberlink Media Suite ( I too have it. So may be it is not an issue) c) when you installed Avast ( may be you should uninstall it and check) d) when you installed any Virtual drive etc., etc., unless you had turned off System Restore. So just check on it.

Otherwise you should uninstall those programs one by one and check.

Yeah I disabled system restore to save space on the SSD. I have tried the fix through that link and it also does nothing. Thanks for your efforts though!

OK. I am back after a good night's sleep.

Now for the easy fix for your problem.

Re-install Windows 7 - shouldn't be difficult since it is only one month old.

Atleast initially till your system settles, do not activate - you have one month's time- and keep your System Restore on.

As you keep installing the programs keep a close watch and try to find out which one is mucking up your system.

I believe that it has something to do with permissions, may be it could be resolved, but honestly it is beyond my comprehension.

( I keep imaging frequently with any new install as I groom it and at any stage if there is a problem, I just revert back to a previous state and avoid the problem program)
