Solved SD Card Reader Not Working, Toshiba Portege Laptop

I just got a Toshiba Portege R835-P83 laptop. It has a SD card reader but it is not working - in the Device Manager for the Ricoh SD Disk Device it says - "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I have tried downloading the latest driver from the Toshiba website but it still doesn't work. Anybody have any suggestions?

Have you tried installing the driver in compatibility mode for whichever operating system was previously on the machine?

It's a completely new machine that came with Windows 7 64 bit so I didn't use compatibility mode.

I'd assumed you were upgrading from a prior OS, but if the machine came with W7 onboard and it was all AOK then have you thought about running a system restore, or reverting back to your restore partition drive image, or disks, which came with the machine?

System restore doesn't have restore points for whatever reason, I'm not sure why. As for reverting back to the partition drive image, I'd have to install all my programs and stuff again, which I'd rather not do....
I might end up doing that eventually but I'd like to try other options first, if they exist.

I would still be tempted to try reinstalling the driver that came with the machine in compatibility mode.

I tried compatibility modes for both Vista and XP, neither of them worked.

The thing is it doesn't seem like Windows is trying to use the driver that I installed - the version number of the driver off the Toshiba website is 2.15.17.02, but the version of the driver that the device manager says is not properly loaded/corrupted is 6.1.7600.16385.

Is there any way to force Windows to use the driver that I downloaded for the SD card reader?

Try uninstalling the hardware in device manager, and choose to remove the driver software simultaneously.

It's an idea to either pull your net connection or set Windows not to automatically search Windows updates for missing drivers when you do this.

Then manually reload the driver package which was originally installed, and should remain on your installation disks, through device manager.

So I disconnected my laptop from the Internet, uninstalled the driver, restarted, installed the driver from the Toshiba website, restarted, and then tried to use the SD card reader again but it still somehow installed that old Ricoh driver.....

You did what I suggested through device manager?

If you had then Windows should have detected an unknown device and asked you for drivers, although I did suggest you manually reload your original driver through device manager if you noticed

That way you'd have avoided the possibility of the OS using a "generic driver"...

Yes, I did what you suggested.
Windows did not detect an unknown device when I put a SD card in the reader, it simply caused the Ricoh SD Disk Device to appear again.

I didn't suggest you load up an SD card. The device will appear in Device Manager regardless of whether or not a card is inserted.

Repeat what I suggested and force back on the original driver thru' Device Manager.

Forget your updated driver. It's just a card reader. You won't get any performance increases

The Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller always appears in the Device Manager.
The Ricoh SD Disk Device does not appear in the Device Manager until I plug in a SD card. This is the driver that Windows can't seem to load properly.

What exactly do you mean by the original driver? I only have on driver installation exe, and that's the one from the Toshiba website.

By original driver I mean the driver which it worked under originally, when it came into your hands

Presumably it worked? You don't say otherwise.

You do talk about using a driver you've downloaded, which I had to presume was therefore a different one to that originally loaded as supplied by the manufacturer.

You're not attempting to use an SDHC card in an SD slot by any chance?

It never worked originally. I didn't test it until after I was done installing all my programs.

Well I don't have the original driver, but I don't think it matters since it never worked originally....

I am trying to use a SDHC card, but the specs for the laptop says it can read SDHC cards as well.

Since it's evidently under warranty my advice is simply return it to where you bought it, rather than mess about any more, perhaps it's faulty hardware - in which case we could all be wasting our breathe trying to do anything about your unfortunate issues with the card reader...

Otherwise uninstall the device and drivers, forget whatever you've downloaded, find the hardware code through Device Manager and then look it up and go from there.

Actually my computer wasn't recognizing any external devices, including USB flash drives, which I didn't realize until yesterday when I plugged in a flash drive and Windows didn't recognize it.

It turns out Acronis Try and Decide was causing some problems. I fixed it by deleting registry entries referring to tdrpman251.
