Computer hackers plan to take the internet beyond the reach of censors by putting their own communication satellites into orbit.

The scheme was outlined at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin.

The project's organisers said the Hackerspace Global Grid will also involve developing a grid of ground stations to track and communicate with the satellites.

Hackers having their own satellites and ground stations to monitor them is going to cost hell of a lot of money, and it is difficult to gather such kind of money. They just don't have that kind of moolah and setups.

Getting a comsat and finding some country to launch it for them and later on controlling them through ground stations is going to be very expensive and not only that it will be illegal to operate as per the government norms, and the governments shall very easily crash the whole project.

Running underground web sites is one thing, but this project is very huge and will be difficult to run. Such ideas are only possible in movies like James Bond 007... but not in real life...

Oh come on now! When i am searching for information on the net i am not in a position to decide what's wrong and what's right. And besides, should you trust the hackers with their satellite? Let's get serious. The latest news is about Google paying people to give their Chrome browser good review. Someone else may post a bad review. So whom are you going to believe? Especially if everything is under a nom de plume and some people have a whole bunch of them. As long as anyone can anonymously post anything the whole thing is useless. If i get caught providing false information i simply take another alias.

To a degree, you are right, but the internet is not all that different from most other things in life. It is always up to each individual to sort through the information available and determine what is true and what is not. Obviously, some people are unable to do so, and others will only have partial success, but at least they do have a choice. The hope is that Franklin was right, that you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Well, i don't know. The danger is that people believe they have a choice while in reality they have not.
If i want to publish a scientific paper in a journal i have to give my real name, give literature references and the place where i did the work. Then the paper is judged by referees who work in the same field and the go-ahead is given to the editor for publication. Even then there is garbage published sometimes.

Perhaps it is splitting hairs, but everybody always have a free choice, however they may not chose what they think they have. Choice is a mental process, which may or may not materialize.

Not that it justifies the practice, but at least in those posts listed in that article, each of them contain the phrase “This Post Sponsored By Google” up front in the listing. To me "sponsored" means paid for. At least that gives a clue as to how much weight to give to the post.
