where would i find the drivers to load? see attached for screenshot

win 7 pro. crashed on thursday and haven't been able to boot since. can get to c: and all files with command prompt, but can't boot into windows anymore. i would like to try loading the drivers for my hard disks, but don't really know where they are or where to find them. SATA hard drive....

it's a Dell Optiplex 745. the hard drive ID is ST3160812AS and it's a 160gig seagate.

yeah, unfortunately i need the SATA motherboard controller drivers. Seagate doesn't offer any, and Dell was no help; they could only offer the xp pro support, and said they didn't have anything for me to download. i need the geek way on this one.

Hi bags305, try the Vista32bit drivers Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States] you should'nt really need the sata drivers the motherboard chipset should sort that out for you, It must be something else that is stopping you from seeing the HDD which unfortunately is beyond my knowledge sorry :(

Try disconnecting all but the operating system drive, then do a repair with the DVD.

what do you mean, pb? all i have is the dvd drive and the sata. if i unplug either one of them, i wouldn't really be able to do much, or maybe i don't understand what you mean??

If you had the SATA drivers loaded before (and I presume you did), the PC crashing suddenly is more of an indication of sudden hard disk failure -- since Windows now can't find the drivers. And, yeah I know you can see the drive contents from the command line, but the disk damage may be affecting the files needed to boot into the desktop.

Suggest you visit the Seagate site and if they have a drive daignostic utility, see if that can be downloaded. You may have to connect this drive to a different PC to install and run that utility.

Unless you have a RAID array installed (which if you have 1 HDD you dont) then you shouldn't need to "load drivers" to see your OS's boot record. The fault is that the boot record is damaged or missing for your win7 install.

My suggestion is to re-install windows (leaving the current file system intact), all your stuff should be placed in a windows.old folder where you can salvage what you need and then delete the folder and the remnants of your previous install.

You will need to re-install all software again.

It may be possible to repair this using "Fix MBR functions" but without the OS listed I couldnt tell you how, perhaps another Guru will comment as to how that can be done....
