Hi all,

My name is Marc, and I could use some help. I built a computer about a year ago. Lately I have been having random freezes and BSODs. If I walk away for more than 5-10 minutes the computer freezes. I have followed the instructions correctly to post this as far as I can tell. Any help would be amazing.

Win 7 Home premium 64 bit
Full Retail
hardware and OS install ~ 1 year old

Looks like you may have a virus, rootkit or the like.
Your AV seems to be AWOL.
Go HERE and install the x64 version in safe mode.

Ok I installed Microsoft security essentials, could not install in safe mode MSE said it could not install on a computer in safe mode. Did a full scan, no threats were found.

Also received and downloaded the hotfix for net framework. Is there any way to see if this is going to help? Or just wait it out.

Thanks for all of the help with this.

Hello again,

Have not had another blue screen. However we have been experiencing a lot more freezes it seems. When I run perf mon, it says I have no AV, however have a fully updated version of MSE. Also seem to be getting a keyboard driver error, however I redownloaded the newest driver and applied it.

Any help would be once again much appreciated,
Marc

You've received a lot of good advice thus far. It might not hurt to do a System File Check. Right-Click on the Command Prompt and run it as Administrator, then type in the following:

sfc /scannow

Note that there is a space after the sfc part. :)

I'm not a BSOD dump expert, but a few things I always try in cases like this are:

1) Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic (Free is fine.) It runs from a bootable disc and will run forever if you let it. Two or three passes without errors is adequate. (With errors means you've found your problem.)

2) Make sure your Power Supply is up to snuff. You might want to post the rest of your system specs, including brand and model number.

3) An overheating CPU or Video card is another likely culprit. Are you monitoring your temps? You might try Core Temp (or something similar) if you are not.

4) Driver issues are always a possible suspect. Troubleshooting them is pretty much a trial-and-error process.

EDIT: Took me a while to put all that together. I see panais has covered a good bit of it. :)

Ok ran memtest free version 4 pass no errors, I have been monitoring temps, neither vid card or cpu have ever overheated. I have been running driver genius and fully updated the drivers, dunno how well the program does tho. Any other ideas before I try to rip the psu out, would really rather not do that unless absolutely necessary, but will if I need to.

Thanks guys,
Marc

One of the fun and wonderful thing about computer problems is trying to figure out whether they are hardware or software related. Since it looks like your main hardware (at least that which can easily be tested, and leaving the PSU as an option to consider later) is all right, let's jump back to the software side of things.

Try running msconfig and disable everything on the "Startup" tab. (You might lose some features of some of your hardware, for instance if you have a fancy-pants keyboard with lots of extra buttons those extra buttons may not work.) This will at least eliminate a few of the "always running" side programs which could be causing a problem.

How often are the freezes occurring at this point? Ironically enough, the ones that are few and far between are harder to track down than the constantly annoying ones. With the latter you can at least tell right away if something you've done has helped.

PS: If your wife comes at you with a meat cleaver, a heavy serving tray works well as a shield. (Don't ask me how I know that.) ;)
