Good and Free system security combination.

Starting from "outside" enable the Router firewall.
Go to...Start\Control Panel\Network and Sharing Center,click the House/Home Icon first to be able to see the router icon,right click on the router icon and click View device webpage,find the firewall\configure,select standard,Apply and exit.

Another way to get there is by typing the router IP address in your web browser.

To find your router ip,click start,accessories,click on Command Prompt,write in Command Prompt "ipconfig" without the quotes and press enter (View attachment D).

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials with windows firewall enable.

---Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender on Windows 7.

By running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.---

Depending on the browser installed on your computer.

Install in Internet Explorer the WOT (Web of trust) add-on and disable the Accept third-party Cookies option.
Go to...Tools\Internet Options... (view attachment A).

Install in Firefox the WOT (Web of Trust) add-on and disable the Accept third-party Cookies option.
Go to...Tools\options... (view attachment B).

Install in Google Chrome WOT (Web of trust) add-on.
These are the steps how to Disable the Accept third-party Cookies option and more in Google Chrome. Manage cookies - Google Chrome Help.

Download,install and update the Free Malwarebytes.

Download,install and update the Free SuperAntiSpyware.

With the above steps,

A)You block almost any unwanted "connection" before it bypass the Router.

B) Microsoft Security Essentials protect your system from virus\trojan+the windows firewall extra protection.

C) With WOT installed in Internet Explorer,Google Chrome or Firefox you have a preopen advice which website is safe to click\enter. (view attachment C)

D) Free Malwarebytes and free Superantispyware.

Run every week full or a quick system scans with those programs.

Using Malwarebytes and free Superantispyware you can update and run scans also in safe mode if needed.

This combination gives you solid and also a lightweight protection.

Have been using WOT for years...Not always accurate but then what is.
The only time I get a red circle here is when Booh and Hopalong are present.
It just warns me that these two are on line and I then take time to complete my sewing, ironing, weeding, taking the trash out, cleaning out the garage, changing oil in lawnmower, and the most important....taking a bath..:roflmao::roflmaod)

Good solid security setup, close to what I'm doing now.

Some very good suggestions. WOT is a good service but is based on user opinion. Norton has a free service that I believe is better. You can also use both.
