How can I Remote Desktop into my XP Mode VM from the outside world?

I have Bridged Networking set up in my XP Mode, and have set it to my primary network adapter (a Rosewill WiFi adapter, if it matters), and I need to be able to connect to it with Remote Desktop from another computer, either on the same network or on the outside world.

I have a static IP set as 192.168.3.249, and the RDP port is the default (3389).

I can not access the VM from the host computer, a computer on the network, or the outside world. (I do have port 3389 forwarded to the VM (192.168.3.249) from my router/firewall).

I can not seem to get it connected.

I tried installing a second VM with XP Pro (not the XP Mode, but still in MSVPC), and set up similar settings (except different IP and a custom RDP port), and can connect to it fine from the host, the network, and the outside world.

Any ideas of how to fix this?

Oh, and before it gets suggested, VNC/LogMeIn/other is not an acceptable solution - it must be RDP, for reasons I don't want to go into detail about...

By assigning an individual ip address from the host (win 7) you can connect via 3389 port. , even you can simply test it from windows 7 , you can also use telnet utility to check firewall or network issue.

What do you mean by 'assigning an individual ip address from the host'?

If you mean set the networking to bridged and give the VM a separate IP from the host, I have already done so. But that hasn't given me access to the VM via Remote Desktop by either the host or the outside network.

You need to do the following

1) From the OUTSIDE you need to know the IP address of your Router -- this is the Internet address the rest of the world will see. You can usually see the IP address by logging on to the router itself and checking the status.

2) Port forward 3389 to the INTERNAL IP address of your VM on your LAN

3) allow any firewall to have this port opened.

Now the problem is usually that your IP address assigned by your ISP will be dynamic --i.e change each time you log on so accessing your router from the Internet at large is a problem.

A FREE solution is to use something like No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP

This will create a "domain" for you and automatically link it to your Router's IP address when you start the computer.


(I'm not too sure of how "separate" the XP mode is since I only use a full Virtual solution -- vmware -- but I'm sure if you disable "Integration features" on the XP mode it will behave like a "classical vm").
