Solved Changing the Option of How to Open A File

In my efforts to get my programs transferred over to 7, I messed up!

You know when you have a file that isn't designated to open with a specific program, Windows gives you the options to choose the program to open it with, or to search with the Web.

Well when I was trying to figure out which program to use to open the document file that has all my backed up invoice information, I inadvertently, forgot to uncheck the box that says to always use this program to open this file, and since it was the wrong file, I cannot get the box unchecked on it now, because it is greyed out.

Is there a fix for that, so I can get it unchecked and can continue to trial and error the programs to open it with?

It's a VBF file which happens not to be on the list!

Just had to look this one up on google.

Exactly Tony! It is a backup file that has all my data on it and I need to restore it so I can get all my info onto my new PC.

Any ideas or suggestions? Is it possible to restore an external drive through Windows 7?

Hi jack1953, you could try using this free program to open .vbf files nullsecurity.org/unpakke project or have you tried a system restore just prior to when you "check marked " the wrong "open with " ?

Well I feel like a real geek!!

I finally went to the Help Section in the invoice software that I was trying to fix, and it gave instructions on how to transfer backup files. I followed the instructions and it worked perfectly!!!!

Hi Jack Glad you sorted it out.

Most files can be re-associated with a right click on the file, choose Open With from the dropdown list. If you can see the program in the list then highlight it in the box, put a tick in always open files of this type like this and click ok.

Sometimes if the program does not come up in the choices box then you either have to re-install the original company software that created the file which then usually forces windows to re-associate it, or use the browse button to browse back to the folder where the exe or something similar lives and try attaching it that way.
