Setting up 5.1 surround sound using only red and green audio jack.

Hi guys,

I was wondering how I would do a 5.1 surround sound set up using only the microphone jack and headphone jack on my laptop - without utilizing an external sound card.

What I am interested in is:

• would it be possible to reconfigure/reassign the role of each audio port and how would I do that?
• How would I physically connect a front left/right, rear left/right and sub-woofer cable, to two ports available on my basic laptop?
  • do i have to strip some wires and "piggy-back" the wires.

Is what I am asking for possible? I know, the easy thing to do is to go and buy an external sound card like the Zalman-RSSC V2 5.1ch USB sound card, but I already have a desktop with an adequate sound-card for the purposes stated above and I want to try something challenging, which brought me to this forum for help.

I know on some audio cards when you plug a device into the port it gives you the option of assigning what you just plugged in, though for laptops they often don't support surround sound. As for the subwoofer I would suggest just getting 2.1 speakers for front and then specifying in Sound setup that you don't have a subwoofer attached but the front speakers are full range. Then you may be able to (depending on sound card and drivers) set up the Bass Management enhancement to crossover bass frequencies from the rear speakers to the front speakers.

What brand is your onboard sound card?

Hi I have played a lot with sound systems.

First of all the 2.5 mm jack on your laptop can only support 2 channels.

Second of all can you strip the wires to make surround sound? Answer is no not really.

Though you might be able to get 5 speakers plus sub woofer to produce sound it will not be true surround sound.

It will sound like the same thing in all of the speakers.

The only things that i know that will produce surround sound out of one cable would be spdif or HDMI if you have it.

HDMI can support not only 1080p video but also 7.1 audio

You would probably have to get a usb or express card for your sound card if you dont have hdmi or spdif built in.
