dvd installation issue

i am able to get windows 7 to boot and start the installation but before i get to select the partition i get a message saying;
A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

i am trying to install to a virtual machine using Virtual PC 2007.
i am able to install XP and Vista to this exact one, but get this message with 7. im somewhat unwilling to put this on a second PC if it comes with this error.

looking through the other posts i ahve tried to use vista to create a partition and format, that works, but then still get this error with 7.

Hello Brocky and a welcome to the VistaForums!

SInce just about everything on virtualzation is discussed on the sister forum Virtualization - Windows 7 Forums you will likely end there anyways on this.

I didn't spend much time with the 2007 version while the installation of the 7 32bit RC went on simply by having a virtual disk already created and starting up the newer Virtual PC for 7. With any disk in the dvd drive where a live cd or a Windows installation disk whatever was on the disk being a live distro or installation disk would simply load up and carry through until at a desktop or an installation was finished.

I have to suggest the other forum however since the guides for seeing that done on Windows 7 as well as the Virtualization section seen there as well.

that offers lots of help with having virtualisation once you have 7 installed.
i, however, am having trouble getting 7 to get past this error mentioned above.

i have seen that a couple of other have had this issue, but not a way to fix that i have seen to work.

We could give you more help if you filled in your system specs. go to the lower left corner and click on sys specs. Also you have vista 32 on the system now? are you trying to install win 7 32 or 64? Do you have a raid controller attached?

Vista 64 SP2
E6850
4gb ram
no raid other than Sata raid
but 7 is to be install into a virtual machine, not actual hardware
its been given 1024mb ram
and a 65gb HDD
in virtual box it was given 128mb video ram

Hopefully you are not trying to install the 64bit 7 on the Virtual PC 2007 version there. You'll run right into problems from the start since even the newer VPC Release Candidate now seen for 7 won't run a 64bit Windows there either.

The 32bit RC went on without fuss however with the host OS being 7 of course. As far as the usual hardwares on the VPC 2007? Forget it! That's the limited side of the virtual machine while the XP mode developed for 7 now has access to usb flash drives even some addons like printers.

A custom install of Windows however won't have those options available. That is also a problem when trying a custom install using the SUN Vlrtual Box and not having access to hardwares and drives while sound is shared on the VPC. The image below shows the XP mode running side by side with the Vista on VPC opposite there.

One problem seen for someone lately trying to install the VPC on 7 and running into problems came down to the recommendation to see another clean install of 7 due to installation problems despite repeat attempts. Evidently a Windows related problem was stalling it there. How long have you been the present Vista installation?

that the problem though, im not trying to install virtual pc on windows 7.

i have an install of windows vista. inside vista, VPC 2007 is installed.
inside VPC 2007 i am attempting to install windows 7.

this is being done to test that it all works before installing it onto another pc. but with the issue of not having drivers to even get installed, i have issues.

You can't run the Windows installer for a custom installation while starting that from an existing installation inside any VM except to upgrade what is directly or replace on the same virtual hard drive. In other words you can't run a VM inside another VM. That simply won't work from the start.

For seeing 7 installed on a virtual drive created for the purpose you have to start up the VPC there with the 7 dvd in the dvd drive where instead of seeing any other existing installation load you instead see the 7 installer start up. From there you are looking at the vhd you created when selecting the drive 7 will go onto.

Once I see Vista back on one of the drives here I will be able to go through the steps there with the 2007 VPC. You may be running into another problem like the need to change a setting in the bios or the model cpu you have won't support virtualization to begin with. Offhand that would be one reason for that error seen there.

im not sure if you understand what i am trying to do.
i only have 1 Vm, i am not trying to make a VM in a VM.

there is a host PC
and a VPC
the host PC is running vista. in a very basic setup. installed onto actual hardware with physical drives.

the VPC im trying to install windows 7 on is not a physical PC.ok? vista on real PC, 7 on a virtual PC. as you saw in the screen shot.
im not trying to be rude, but i didnt think what i was trying to do would be so hard to understand.

The virtual hard drive is still a file stored on the actual physical drive you have Vista installed on. What I was attempting to point out there was that you won't be to start up the Windows installer for 7 from inside the Virtual PC 2007 itself unless you were attempting an upgrade of Vista already on a vhd there with that running.

When first loading up the VPC 2007 version already having a vhd created and ready for 7 and the 7 dvd in the drive you should see the installer start up out of nowhere in a sense as if you had booted directly from the disk. Yet you are still booted in Vista. Once you reach the part to select where 7 is to be installed the vhd you created will be the only drive/partition to select unless you already other vhds present.

Once I have Vista back on one drive again here I will be able to capture some screens of the entire process which will help a great when trying to cover things. First I have to take a few 7 drives offline for that however since I've been working with 7 in different configurations. :D
