Hi, My name is Katy and I have a question, maybe 2 ! :sarc:

If you look at this screenshot, there is a file that I pointed at and was wondering if anyone knew what it was and if I needed it..
And...do I need any of these things? Just seems like so much on my start-up, but I don't know.. I'm no good at this! :(

2nd.. By any chance, does anyone know why my PC all of a sudden decided not to turn off when I tell it to? lol Seems wiered but it's true! I press start like always then press shut down, and now it just won't shut down. I tried to reboot..same thing! I have to manually press the big button on my tower (Can't be very healthy) every time I need to shut my pc off!

Thanks in advance,

Kaytea!

Hello Katy and welcome to Sevenforums!

First of all, do you use an updated antivirus? If so, which? Have you used it to 'full scan' for any viruses?

secondly, in system configuration (from your screenshot), go to the general tab and select "normal start-up". Unless you know more about computers, I would recommend not altering any of those settings, but that is for you to determine at what level your skill is at.

next, you can go to the start menu and click 'all programs', and look for the startup folder. Once inside, you can freely delete all that you don't want starting with your computer. I would recommend leaving the wireless (if you have it) in there to startup with the computer for a faster connection.

also, run this tool to see if there are any errors that it might be able to fix: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

lastly, if you want to 'optimize' your coputer, without using any 'fix it' utilities (They aren't a very good idea for windows 7), click on the optimize windows link below in my signature. That will show you many safe ways you can use to make windows 7 run more smoothly and according to your taste :)

You really don`t need any of those except for the last one as they all look like updaters. You could uncheck them 1 at a time and reboot.

AddRAM is right. All you need there is the AV program and the updaters. Disable the rest.

And Pleeease type in black and non-bolded like everybody else. That awful color hurts my old eyes.

While I would consider whether or not you actually wanted/used some of those programs (can always uninstall them if you like), it may be better to keep the updaters and whatnot going, simply because you can have issues later on with old software that isn't being updated, unless you prefer to manually update them yourself.
However, normally I would disable the updaters also, as I myself prefer to manually update my software.

Is your computer still having trouble?

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies everyone!
Sorry about your eyes, but purple iiiis my color!
Dusty, I don't update on my own, I just let my pc do all that for me.
As far as scanning..my pc scans every night at 3am I think it's called Microsoft Security Essentials.
But everyday it says No virus...yet my pc flashes it seems every 5 mins or so, almost looks like a flash from a camera (obviously it's not) but that's what it looks like, a quick flash. And now it won't turn off properly. Although sometimes it does...lol
Dusty, I took your advice and left most of those on my start-up and took some off.

Katy

Alrighty, lets see what we can do to fix this problem, Katy.

Windows updates automatically for you, which is good and easy. If you would also like windows to find and install any drivers that your computer might need, follow this tutorial to enable automatic device installation: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2803-device-installation-settings.html

After that, manually check windows update for any important and optional updates that aren't installed automatically (at least just this once). One such update is for the Microsoft Security Essentials (your antivirus). It will better help your computer detect viruses and remove them.

Now, if it is still having problems, you might consider doing a repair install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html - you can read the warnings in the tutorial on what it will change, but it may fix some things for you.

If that doesn't work, fill out your system specs with this tool (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html) so I can direct you where to go for a graphics driver replacement that may help you out.
