Hi, I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem before and/or if anyone has a fix for it? When ever I try and open some JPEGs from email in Outlook 2010 if comes up with this...

The file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer:

Microsoft Outlook image previewer

To open this file in its own program, double click it.

.... I try and open up the file in Windows Photo Viewer and it says;

Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer.

.... This only happens with some pictures, others are fine, and they're the same format, JPEG. I've tried sending a sample through from hotmail to Outlook and these seem to work fine, its just from other sources that it seems to be temperamental.

I've done a system restore and uninstalled any programs I think maybe conflicting with it, although there wasn't anything that stood out. This problem wasn't there before, it must of appeared within the last couple of weeks but unsure of exact date as some pictures open and some don't.

There doesn't seem to be any updates for the photo viewer or Outlook!?

Any ideas much appreciated?

Hello gwfunk, welcome to Seven Forums. :D

The following link relates to Outlook 2007, but the resolution may well be the same:
Error message when you try to preview an Excel 2007 workbook in Outlook 2007: "This file cannot be previewed"

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • In the Excel 2007 workbook, the Sharing with track changes check box is selected.
  • In the Excel 2007 workbook, the List changes on a new sheet check box is selected.
Try UN-checking the above options.

Hi Irene,

Thanks for your reply.

I get where you're coming from but I don't think the problem is with the program(s) as some pictures display ok and others just don't work on any program I try and open them up with.

I think it must be with Outlook somewhere as it accepts pictures from hotmail but not from other sources, so maybe a configuration setting to do with pictures or downloads or something... not really sure where to look though, I've searched through Options but can't see anything that seems like it would help!?

Hi Irene,

I've tried changing the trust centre settings round but it seems to make no difference.

I think as Outlook accepts the pictures from Hotmail then I'm guessing it must be Outlook's acceptance from certain programs/email servers which has changed in some way or form... maybe??

Can you say which specific servers/programs are causing the problem?

Hi Irene,

It seemed to be the enquiry forms I had coming in from my website business that were having the problem.

The site and server were down for a while though which is why I have been a while and now it's back and server as changed it is miraculously working again (fingers crossed it stays that way).

Thanks for your help :)
