Hi everyone, I've spent the last week reading every possible fix for this problem on these forums and others and nothing so far has worked, so maybe if I spell out my individual situation, there might be a fix?

I bought a brand new out of the box Acer 5742ZG laptop here in Moldova. It seemed fine in the store but it only had Linux Linpus on it...

The fan is not running at all. So you can imagine, it shuts down after about 20 minutes of running Windows 7 and especially quick if I use the internet or anything more laborious.

I had installed it to IDE but switched to AHCI thanks to these forums. I tried their EPower Management tool, but it won't initialize and after finding some screen shots, it looks like an Acer version of the Windows 7 battery Management Tool, nothing to control the fan.

I installed Speed Fan and it works but it cannot find a fan.

I tried a number of other free ware and demo version fan control applications, but nothing can seem to control the fan.

It is starting to sound like a hardware issue and opened a ticket with Acer Euro to start that ball rolling, but the idea of losing this thing for another month while I wait for a repair gives me heart burn.

Any other ideas to somehow kick start the fan if its possible?

It could be something as simple as a loose connection from fan to mobo. I would suggest opening the back of laptop and check it out but that might void your warranty. The only other cause would be if the fan is physically jammed by something....ie wire, piece of paper. Again you would have to open the laptop to look and we're back at the warranty issue again. Have you tried taking it back to the place of purchase to see if they offer any technical repair options.

Personally, I think the support ticket with Acer is the way to go....a small sacrifice of time is well worth it. This way if it cant be repaired they can replace the whole laptop.

Thanks. I so want to just open it, but I had a HP before where those *******s had a piece of tape INSIDE the damn RAM area that voided the warranty. Of course you don't see it until you open it. I contacted them and they had no answers either and Im gonna send it in. Never seen a factory product make it out without testing the product, but then again the crap they seem to send here to Eastern Europe would sicken the rest of Europe and America.

I loaded up Ubuntu just to see if I could initialize it through Linux and even Ubuntu could not find the fan. I think its definitely a loose wire.

Consider closed as this is probably an individual case, but beware of ACER!
