No internet access, but can ping router via LAN

Hello,
I reinstalled windows 7 home premium on my notebook, and downloaded the NIC & other necessary drivers from the manufacturer's website. I have no other software on the N/B. When I connect the LAN cable I can successfully ping my router, but not www.google.com. I can see the other PC's on the network. The icon on the bottom right shows a yellow triangle and I have no internet access. I have an automatic IP & DNS server set in the IPv4 & v6.
I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 on the network that connects to the internet with the router.

Please help, I can't understand how a newly formatted PC struggles to connect to the internet (via LAN), when my username & password is already setup on my router.

Are their any 'Network adapters' for wireless showing in Device Manager ?

Yes, I have an Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapter, with no yellow exclamation marks, and it picks up wireless networks in my area.

Can you tell us what windows troubleshooter says?

My troubleshooter tells me to restart my broardband modem, and contact my ISP if this fails. I have restared the modem, and not contacted my ISP, as the other PC's on the network can connect to the internet.
When the troubleshooter has completed it tells me that the following problems have been found: "The connection between your access point, router or cable modem and the Internet is broken." Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found.
I am not using an access point and I have tried 3 different LAN cables, which I know work with another PC.

...and what happens if you ping an external IP like 74.125.227.102 (google)?

If that goes thru, then there might be a DNS issue - a host file issue.

Maybe the media that you used to transfer/install the drivers after the OS build was infected.

Also, did you update the BIOS? That can get infected as well.

Download/transfer/run this single file tool: ESET SysInspector.
It does not install anything, it just gives its opinon on lots of things.

Or just start over with another clean OS install and only install the network card's drivers - if need be... then test for connectiviy. Avoid installing video, sound or any other drivers until you've tested for connectivity to the net.

OK, this is nuts:
Since I first posted my question I have done the following:
I have gone into my Device Manager to check if I have a wireless device showing (to answer Roderunner).
Then I clicked on Windows Troubleshooter, which told me that it was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found (to answer andrewcarroll).
I also restarted my router, but the notebook could still not connect.
Then I pinged 74.125.227.102 (to answer UsernameIssues), and I know that this didn't work earlier, but I did it again, and now the internet works.
So I am fantastically happy, but frustrated, as I feel that I haven't done anything, and it seems that I just started to work by itself /

I'm like you - I would much rather know what the cause and fix was... but that is life

Thanks for the effort to all that took the time to try to help. I'm however not going to mark this as solved, as it's just going to frustrate future users, just like this n/book has frustrated me.
