VPN to access a local machine

Hi all,

I will cut straigh to the point! I am wondering if it's possible to set up a VPN to connect to a PC on another network so i can access the other machines on that network. e.g If I have an office with a router and 1 pc connected to the internet and 4 more machines conected to the router but not going out to the internet. Is it possible to connect to that machine via VPN so then it would be as if you were on that network to then be able to access the PC's on the network?

Josh, welcome to the windows 7 forums.

One option which I use is a free vpn called Hamachi. It is owned by the logmein people but it does have a free version. It is encrypted and allows you to access the other machine using either Remote Desktop Program or another of the free programs like VNC. There is also the free version of Logmein.

search on hamachi and you should be able to see what it does. They do have a pay version but there is a free version.

Will give that a try! Do you know if it's possible to FTP to the machines on the network to? So being able to access the file root rather than taking control of the PC's? (If this can be done without any software that would be great, I am thinking maybe with port forwarding?)

with the permissions set for access, you just use windows explorer to any shared drives on the target
computer. or set up an FTP server if you wish

1 more for you then. If the network doesn't have a machine on the network. Just a router (that goes out to the network) and then 4 machines conntected to the router, but those machines are not allowed out to the internet only to talk to eachother. Is it possible to connect to them via port forwarding? If so would you need to install a FTP server on each of the machines?

Josh, if the machine that your vpn'ing into has the priv's to connect to the other non internet machines. then you should be able to use either RDP or VNC to do anything on the connected machine that is allowed if you were at the local machine.
It is not necessary to install a ftp server on any of the machines as via hamachi you can rdp in and copy and paste any files to the remote machine.
