External HDD Not Recognised by USB 3.0 Port (Asus Zenbook)

Just got a new Asus Zenbook UX31E and am having a certain problem where if I plug my external drive (Samsung S2 1TB, USB 3.0, 2.5") into the 3.0 port windows tries to install a driver for the new device but fails. Now the drive powers on when connected but wont load up as an accessible drive and is not found is disc management.

I've tried the HDD successfully in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works fine on my Zenbook's USB 2.0 port so I'm guessing there's no problem with the HDD itself. Also I have tried a small flash drive in the Zenbook's 3.0 port which worked fine.

I have tried updating the USB 3.0 driver to the latest version via Asus' driver database but have got the same result.

I would of thought with such a prestigious laptop someone else would of run across this problem but all my googling has turned up ziltch.

Any ideas/suggestions much appreciated!

(Running Windows 7 Home Premium)

Is anyone able to point me in the right trouble shooting direction? Like are there any generic USB 3.0 drivers out there that could be used in place of Asus' ones? Has anyone come across an issue like this before?

I am having this exact same problem, but with an Adata Nobility NH03 drive. I am looking for some assistance to this as well, so I will be watching this post.

If you haven't tried it yet, try reinstalling the chipset driver for your motherboard.

So far I have tried updating the chipset and usb drivers as well as the bios and all windows updates. None of that helped.

I thought I might of determined the problem to be a physical one. (though now i'm not so sure)

I noticed that if I plug the USB in half way and tilt it at an angle it does install the driver sucessfuly and transfers at speeds of 40-50 MB/s but this only works in this circumstance and usually doesn't last long; after wiggling it more or pluging it in fully the computer says "this device could perform faster if plugged into a USB 3.0 port". I called asus who advised me to return it to one of their third party repair centers to have a look. I'm pretty sure it's not the cable as I was able to test it on another laptop with 3.0 and it worked great.

I've just talked to the tech who looked at it and they seam to think it's the drives fault rather than the laptop but I'm not sure if i should believe them as the drive worked fine in another laptop i tried in on in the same enviroment. Their justification for saying this is that another drive they've tried works fine in the laptop.

Samsung support who I called were usless and told me to return it though they didn't even enquire as to the particular model or present any possible reason for the issue.

At this point I guess I need to determine for myself where the problem lies. Any ideas where to start? Hard to know who to go to in terms of reparing or replacment when I don't at least know this much... :(

This thread mentions the jmicron firmware the S2 uses has USB 3.0 issues but not sure if it's too relevant.

Hmm, you've swapped cables and it will work fine on other computers. I think the tech guy is, well, under educated, to be nice. It would appear the ports or bus on the motherboard is loose.

Thanks for the link before britton30, I'll give the driver a go when I get my laptop back in a few days.

Swapped cables? I haven't tried a different cable with the same drive if that's what you mean though I might purchase one just to see if this fixes the problem.

I guess it could be a loose connection on the motherboard as you say (seams somewhat unlikely for a brand new laptop) or perhaps the drives imbedded Jmicron firmware is not likeing the 64bit/USB 3.0 windows enviroment. Either way not much left I can do besides returning the hard drive...

Sorry, too many threads.:o
Trying a different cable would be a good thing to try. It almost has to be a loose connection in the cable or board.

I appriciate your taking the time to offer a solution; though in my case your advise hasn't helped unfortunately...

Since raising this thread I've since brought a Hitachi Touro Mobile Pro 750GB which is working fine with the USB 3.0 port :)

I guessing the trouble i'm having with the Samsung might lie with the drive's firmware being incompatible with the zenbooks Fresco USB 3.0 drivers. I guess I wouldn't mind so much if I could determine exactly where the issue lay

Anyway glad to hear you've found a solution that works for you!

usb3 driver

renesas driver
one step older version works best ver. 2.1.28.0
today's version is 2.1.28.1

installer suggests to just install over the old version.... Don't do it this way ! ! !

instead :

1-goto "programs and features" de-install renesas driver
2-restart
3-goto device manager
under: Universal Serial Bus controllers

Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub

are no longer present
if still present De-install them both

4- install the renesas driver from the downloaded file.
5- restart
6- start device manger again and have a look if ...Host controller and Root hub are present again
(and under driver ver. 2.1.28.0)

.....
to speedup the usb3 port to the maximum

regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\usbstor\054C00C1

ad value....DWord....Hexadecimal

MaximumTransferLength
value: 2097120

....
for going back to default speed....just delete this DWord again
....

for speed checking and durability use Crystal Diskmark (install not needed just get the PROG-files out and use it anywhere).....Or just install it of course
the sequential measurement is the best for testing

The USB3 monitor is not really needed
NUSB3MON
if you prefer then disable it in MSconfig ...startup items...
(i have left it activated)
end

Thanks a lot for this Great Forum. ! ! !
