Solved "Windows Update encountered an unknown error." 8024402F

Hello. Recently many computers on our network are unable to search for new updates. We keep getting error code 8024402F and it says "Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

We use Trend Micro Antivirus 7 (SP 1) and do not have the Firewall enabled. I've already tried disabling it, as well as adding the Windows Update URL's to the URL Filter, but no change.

I sent a ping to update.microsoft.com and they all timed out, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I am not quite sure how to handle this and they were all working just a few weeks ago. I've already tried the FixIt solution and resetting the Windows Update components. Here is a part from the WindowsUpdate.log file:

I note the date on this report is from a while ago - or your clock is off.
Check that the time/date/region on the affected machines is correct before doing anything else

(All MS server have PING response turned off by default - ignore that)

That was an old log entry. I went ahead and edited it with a current one.

The root problem appears to be much deeper that the obvious one - SOAP_E_CLIENT The message was malformed or incomplete (0x8024400D) - Windows Update may apply (I can't read it, as it comes up in Chinese (?) for me, for some reason! - the fixit may not be one you've already tried, and should work regardless of any language problem)

Actually you're right. After checking all the Windows Update URL's, it seems our SonicWall filtering was blocking one of them and it now runs through!
