I cannot locate the source of an onscreen volume control which pops up whenever I change the volume with my mouse wheel or Fn keys. It does not pop up when I use the slider on the speaker icon in the systray. It is not related to my mouse (if I activate that OSD it overlays the one I'm trying to disable). I suspect it is related to the Fn key volume control but don't know how to modify it. Thanks!

It's likely a setting in a Dell utility that monitors your hot keys etc. It may even be part of the Sound card driver app installed by Dell.

If you have a Dell keyboard it will more than likely be related to your keyboard driver.

You could uninstall your keyboard driver and your keyboard should still work, but with limited functionality.

thanks alphanumeric. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to use your information. How would I locate which dell utility was causing the problem?

seavixen32. thanks for your input, but I don't think I'm bugged enough by the popup volume control to wish to have limited functionality of my keyboard. It does have some nice extras...

Look down in the task monitor next to the clock for an ICON to any Dell apps. Or look though your start menu for any Dell programs. There may also be an ICON in the Control Panel. I don't own a Dell so can't tell you exactly where to look. On my Acer Aspire I believe its the Launcher app does that, and you can disable that feature from its settings menu.

okay. I think I've finally figured out a fix. I went into msconfig under the startup tab and disabled "Quickset." I still seem to have all the functions I want without the onscreen popup covering up everything I'm working on. Thanks to everyone for giving me ideas!

One of the nice things about Windows 7 is that most of the Media keys like play, pause, etc, and the hot keys like Home, Search, etc will work without having to install the bundled keyboard software. The only ones on my Logitech keyboard that don't work without Setpoint are the super custom Blue labeled keys. Some of those I do have use for so I installed Setpoint. Anyway it looks like you solved your problem so thats good.

Missing Volume Bar (Setting)

For my VAIO, this resolved the issue. There may be something similar for the Event Service that you might be able to locate.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Locate the VAIO Event Service and right click > Properties

Change Startup Type to Automatic and Start the Service
(to turn on the on screen display)

Change Startup Type to Disabled and Stop the Service
(to turn off the on screen display)

Hope this helps

Thanks Neon32. Unfortunately, I can't find a corresponding service on my Dell, but I appreciate your response nonetheless.

You might have something listed in the start menu under a Dell program group.
