"A disk read error occurred" on wd10ears

Hello

I have had this problem for few days, i tried everything i could think of.
I suddenly got the message:
"A disk read error occurred,
press Alt+ctr+Del To restart"

First, i restored the BIOS settings to default, didn't work.
then i changed the HDD's cable, didn't work either.
Then i connected the HDD to another PC, I seem to see my partitions but without the sizes, the system stops when i try to open on of them!
I also tried bad-sector scanning, but it stops half way through!

at last, i tried booting from Ubuntu CD while my HDD is connected, but it took some time booting. So i tried booting without connecting the HDD and after it booted i connected it, but i didn't see my partitions!

it's a 1 TB, wd10ears. with less than 50 GB free space!
I NEED the DATA ON IT! IT"S VERY IMPORTANT! :(

any solutions guys?

You're welcome. Let us know how the recovery process goes. These usually take a while, so progress updates are appreciated. :)

I tried copying a big folder of 250 GB, but it took an hour just to copy 500 MB!!
it actually started with reasonable speed but it got slower!
I canceled the operation 'cause on this rate it would take about a month to copy all the 950 GB :(:(

Any thoughts on this?

If you have a lot of bad sectors or clobbered sectors, it can take a very long time to restore the files. Can you copy one file at a time from that folder instead?

I think i can, but it will probably take a long time also!

do you recommend using HDD Regenerator for scanning the hard drive for bad-sectors?
could it help speeding things up?

It depends on the number of bad sectors.. if there a few bad sectors then the HDD regenerator would work for you. But reading your problem, i dont think that hdd regenerator will do any good. I suggest you to back up whateva data you are able to move.

it's 950 GB, most files are important.

I ran the scan but it was too slow too!
it stated that the remaining time is 830 Hours!!

i canceled it for now, but u think it would actually take that much time or it will finnish in a day or so?

Does anyone have an idea how to speed things up?
or any other solution?

Hi,

Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done at this stage - you have to persist with copying your data off as soon as you can. The speed of copying is dependant on the state of the HDD - many bad clusters = slow read time.

Golden

I agree with Golden. And to answer your question, there is not clear cut method to determine how long it will take. It could take as long as it is saying (probably not~35 days, though). It may take a few days, a week, or longer. I would get it going as soon as possible while the drive is still working...

that's too bad, looks like i try copying whatever files i can, then run a bad-sector' scan.

Q1: If i ran the scan for, lets say a week, and completed about 50% and i stopped it and fixed the bad sectors he found, will that help?

Q2: If i formatted the Hard Disk, will the bad sector go or i'll have to run a scan also?

Q3: If i formatted the Hard Disk and used a files recovering software, is there a chance of recovering my files?

thanks alot guys, you have been real help

I would not recommend formatting at this time. Normally, I would recommend a chkdsk with recovery of bad sectors by using the /r flag, but your drive seems beyond that point. I am not sure a format would even complete in the present condition. Your best option is recover the files now, then worry about recovering the drive later.

mmm guys, one something new came up!
i got the most important files from partition D
but the problem is partition C (the system's partition)
it disappeared!
I can see the other two, but not C!

though i can see in one of the rescue kit's tools (boot corrector), it's branded formatted, but i can see that the size's are okay!

i just need some small files from it
any idea to how to get to it?

thanks
