Ping mismatch between speed tests and actual in-game.

Hello, i am new here to seven forums, not sure if this is the right thread i should be asking in, but never know till i try. Anyhow, I am playing a game called Aion, and my Ping in that game is around 70~100Ms.

When i did a speed test to where the server was roughly located it said my ping was 14Ms - http://speedtest.net/result/1871105926.png

I use Verizon fios, 25/25 speed plan, a MI424WR Router, that was provided, and a wired connection.

*Also i do not have any FPS Lag, i am getting 50-60 frames.
*And i have leatrix latency fix installed, version 3.00

Could anyone please shed some light on my issue here? Would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi Condiments and welcome to W7 Forums

Lots of factors come into play when it comes to Ping times. Firstly, remember that the value that you get at any particular time is what it is AT THAT TIME, i.e. Ping is a dynamic variable. Secondly, it depends on the load at both the destination server and any intermediate servers in the path between you and it - in other words, the more players connected the greater the load. Thirdly, your time of day and how many others are sharing your line (the contention ratio). Unfortunately, most of these are beyond your control (except, perhaps, the time of day that you choose to play). You could try logging out of the game and logging back in again, to see if by doing that you get any improvement (possible, if a different route between you and the game server is established).

Thanks dwarf for your suggestions, I've tried them , i play often so i log in and out frequently, ping still stays the same.
-I have also played at many different times , whereas the server load is high, and low, still no significant difference.

Also, i do have a iptv device, that is sharing the internet connection, but i doubt it makes a difference when i game, because i've tried disconnecting that device and still the ping is the same.

Unless you can actually ping the game server machine itself, you won't get an accurate number.

It's also possible that the "ping" time listed in the game is not the true Internet "Ping" which just sends a packet to a ping server which immediately returns it. It may actually be measuring not just the transit time but the time it takes an action (like a player movement command) to get through the game engine and back out. Of course that would be possibly much higher.

What are the other players you know or play with getting?

I have a few friends whom i play with, the server for Aion is in Philadelphia, pa , I live in northern Virginia. (~150miles away or so)

- Two friends from NJ, About ~75miles from the server have 20ping
- One friend from Chicago, Not sure how many miles, but he receives 30ping

It would be best to know the name/address of the actual server machine and ping it directly (if it responds, it may not).

You can also try using "tracert" instead of ping, also to the server machine and see if there is a slowdown between any two routers from you to the server.

But if the in-game "ping" is actually going though it's internal game sockets and not the standard ping socket. Ping and Tracert might not show the problem.

At that point I don't know... If you have a packet inspection firewall under your control, that could maybe slow things down. WiFi can seem fast when unloaded (just running ping by itself) but then lag horribly when playing a game across it. (Have you tried pinging WHILE playing?) In that case, get off WiFi if you want to game :)

I have tried pinging while playing, 18ms on speedtest.net , the WiFi is not on, And no one else is connected but me. Still the ping in game is 70~100.

I will try to get the name/address of the actual server machine , and use a tracert.
