I've a customer whose Win 7 Home 64 bit won't install all the updates. He's got a list of ~24 updates that, when installed, results in error code 8007371b or 80073712.

I've run SFC successfully with no errors as well as AntiMalwarebytes. Also ran MS Fixit 8025769253168492.4.1 which said it found 2 errors and fixed them (but it didn't really). Curiously, when I ran this util in Safe Mode, it reported back that two errors were found but only one could be fixed.

Also ran MS Fixit 50123 successfully.

Downloaded and ran the Update System Readiness Tool which found no errors to fix.

Booted in Safe Mode and also in Clean boot. Still could not successfully install the updates.

The Windows Update troubleshooter was run but it too didn't fix the problem.

Customer had tried the Upgrade route from an ISO he made and it ran to about 75% completion but then failed. He said the failure point happened when the upgrade was installing applications (???? ) or something like that.

I want to re-run the upgrade, but what I want to know is, is there something else I could check prior, something that help me identify the problem. TIA

Oh, one more thing. When the upgrade failed for the customer, the error message referenced lack of disk space. However, he's clearly enough space (~800 Gb). He couldn't remember the exact wording but the message stated something similar to "not enough disk space to install the applications."

Try installing one at a time, starting with the oldest, and rebooting whenever requested before going to the next?

I tried updating single files at random. No go. BTW: The customer was in contact with Microsoft. He was assured they would find a solution ... they essentially gave up at 3 days of attempts.

Hey, thanks for the info. I'll pass that onto the customer. Not sure if he wants me to run it so it maybe awhile before I have any news of the outcome. Thx!

I have the same problem. I just tried the Microsoft Fixit thing writhziden linked but it didn't help.

edit: One error code is the same (8007371b) and the other is different (800736B3). Fixit just seems to check if they download ok, and the issue is definitely with the installation.

Another option is to reset the Windows updates: How do I reset Windows Update components? See if resetting the updates resolves the problem downloading/installing them.

If the above does not work, 8007371b, I suggest that you start your own thread to get more dedicated help with your specific problem.

My customer ran the latest update fix suggested by writhziden but it still didn't fix the problem. The tool apparently fixed some location issues but nothing more. His oldest unsuccessful update is KB2207566. Is this (lack of) update creating the bottleneck?

Sometimes an update is dependent on prior updates. Might try downloading/installing that update again as the first download may have been corrupted.

We've tried installing that update (the oldest one in his listing of unsuccessful installs) numerous times. No go. Thanks.

1. Is your client in the habit of running "Registry cleaners?" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)

2.System Restore.
Is there a System Restore point created PRIOR to when the problems started?

3. Clear out the temporary downloads file and internet cache to remove any corruption from there.

To delete temporary update files

Open Computer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Computer.

Double-click the local hard disk where Windows is installed, typically drive C.

Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Double-click the DataStore folder to open it, and then delete all files and folders in the folder.
Administrator permission required
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the Back button. In the SoftwareDistribution folder, double-click the Download folder to open it, and then delete all files in the folder.

Administrator permission required.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. Have you checked in Event Viewer for relevant messages pertaining to the problems experienced?

5.

I've passed the info to the customer. It maybe a few days before he has the time to try the suggestions. In answer to your questions (JMH): I don't know if the customer has used any registry cleaners. I'll find out. 2) I'm unsure as to whether he tried a system restore. 3) I've asked him to try cleaning out the temporary downloads. 4) I checked the Event Viewer but couldn't find any info beyond "unsuccessful installation" of the updates. 5) The customer was in contact with Microsoft and they provided 3 days full of suggestions and but couldn't find a solution.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Possibly, update KB2207566 could be culprit (from way back in August 2010). Is there any way to get a complete listing of files that were installed/updated? I checked the knowledgebase but couldn't make head or tail of it. SCHANNEL.DLL is a major player in this update but I don't know what other files were affected. Thx.

Yeah, I read through that but for the life of me I couldn't decypher the info to find a usable file listing.
