Ok so i did a little searching but i did not find the answer to my question so i thought i would post it here....

I have a dual boot xp/7, when i boot up in xp and shut off the computer i can use wol to to turn on the computer but when i boot up in 7 and shut off the computer i CAN'T use WOL to turn on the computer. I went into device manager>Network adapters>properties>advanced>wakeup capabilites and magic packet is enabled just like on windows xp. I also have the "Allow this device to wake the Computer" checked under power management. So im not sure what the problem is, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I do not understand how the failure of a powered off box to respond to a WOL signal is connected to Windows 7.

I actually have the same issue...

only mine is not a dual boot, ONLY a Win7 install...

bios, nic settings are all correct.

When Win7 is shutdown, unable to WOL. Hence I put it in hibernate, WOL works both from the LAN AND WAN.

HOWEVER, this issue only occurs at my home, at work the 3 Win7 machines I have running all WOL from shutdown both from the LAN AND WAN.

Home I have a linksys router, at work PFSense....

Prior with WinXP, I never had an issue.

After thorough testing, I've come to a conclusion it has to do with the nic drivers and compatibility with Win7...solution...wait and see...

Ok so i found my answer.... I'll give you the long story. I thought it might be the driver so i went to asus's website and downloaded the latest vista driver(yea i know theres no windows 7 but i figured it would work) and when i went to install it i was told that the latest driver was already installed so i screwed around some more that i thought i should go stright to the source and went to marvell's website and downloaded the latest driver and installed it. This worked and now my WOL works great :)

There's an article on wiki that states ACPI aware OS's can in fact influence the S5 (power off) state.

Sadly they don't explain how, but since a driver fixed the OP's problem, it must be true.

I am going to dig for that. It can only mean that a flag is flashed on the NIC or the NIC stays "in a warm state" when the machine is S5.

I am especially curious if unplugging the machine (power strip OFF) causes the NIC to reset.

I should add.. I watched this thread with interest for almost two days and only responded when the OP bumped it. I am very interested in the various power states and other power dynamics in Windows 7.
 
Hello I have the same problem. WoL sometimes work's sometimes didn't in Windows 7. I have an iPhone 3G with a wol app on it too, and the WoL working rate is about 2of/10 so about 20%. Whit XP I didn't hade this issues. I have a D-Link DIR-630 router and a TP-Link gigabit switch too. I'm Clueless...

Irus, how did you wake it up. using remote desktop or what other tool?

did you wake it from power off or stand by/hibernate mode?

did you wake the w7 computer using a different OS computer? like, using an XP to wake a 7 up?

same problem here, got a dual boot xp / windows 7 machine.
All normal WOL settings are configured and pc wakes up when shutting down from xp. But not when shutting down from windows 7.

However, I downloaded the latest drivers from the marvell site, but that didn't solve my problem.

I got ;

win 7 64 ultimate
asus p5b deluxe mainboard with marvell 8001 and 8056 network card.

I tried with and without the setting "only allow magic packet to wake up computer", no result......

Just thought i'd wade in with my WOL experianced with an Acer Aspire M3800 as i came across this form while trying to figure out why i couldnt get WOL working.

I have wol set up for a number of PCs on my network and when I bought this PC it specifically said, WOL ready. So after setting everything in the bois and on the adapter I was extreemly confused as to why it wasn't working.

Long story short - Drivers!

The NIC is an Intel 82567v2 and after going and getting the drivers from Intel more WOL opens appeared in the power management tab regarding WOL. I set these to accept magic packet and bingo, all started working.

Hope this helps someone one day, I never thought OS drivers would matter when the PC is off, live and learn.
