This sort of stuff reminds me of an old Irish expression

"The price of Education is expensive but the price of Ignorance is Astronomical" !.

People can easily remove most crapware manually --it's not that difficult -- but if MS or any other company want to supply a service they feel people will use then so be it --it's a Free Market.

IMO the 99 USD would be better spent in switching the OEM Windows to a full retail version (which doesn't have crapware on it and can be switched to a new machine if required).

My cousin's husband is a pretty sharp guy who has excellent negotiating skills--the car dealerships in the area have his picture on their dartboards :p-- but when he told me he pays some remote "service" $700.00 a year to "maintain & tune" his family's computers (4 laptops & 3 desktops) I was like... DUUUUDE, SNAP OUT OF IT! I'll do it for you and it'll only cost you a few steaks on the barby & a coupla' cases of Corona lol.

Whilst I can see this service being useful for some, I'd sooner spend a bit of
time doing it myself, and saving the $99.00 for something I want/need.

This machine's Win 7 HP 64-bit OEM setup took up over 60GB BEFORE I'd installed
anything at all.

It now weighs-in at approximately 58GB with ALL my programs AND a 22GB 'Games' folder.

Big difference, also it's faster and more reliable.

Not to mention the satisfaction of successfully accomplishing something new and understanding your computer a lot better. As gregrocker says in his tut, make your recovery disks and/or system image (preferably just before doing the clean reinstall.). If the clean reinstall doesn't go exactly as planned the computer can be restored to either factory specs (recovery disks) or just like it was before starting the clean reinstall (system image.)

I don't bother with trying to remove the bloatware. Even after removing the bloatware, there are still a bunch of the OEM's logos and usually, the Windows installation is screwed up in some weired way. I just pull out my Windows disc and reformat my pcs. There was one pc in my house that came with Windows Vista and it got the free upgrade to Windows 7 and that thing was so slow after upgrading. (It was an HP upgrade to Windows 7) It kept all of the logos and other junk from HP that was in Vista. That pc ended up freezing up at logoff so we reformatted it and it has never run better than it does now:)

So Microsoft are going to charge nearly 100 dollars for removing stuff which should never have been put on in the first place?

Why don't they just stop these manufacturers from putting their crap on anyway? Only let them install drivers and essential programmes for the pc to function properly?

It's the vendors like HP, Dell, Lenovo and the like which allow the bloatware to be installed.

The reason: They get kickbacks from the bloatware vendors, and thus can offer you a lower price on a PC.

In practice? Color me skeptical. One thing I've learned in the school of hard knocks is that the producer of a good/service will ALWAYS look to and/or find a way to screw the consumer. Why? Because they can.

I think it can be simpler. By a P/C or Laptop without a operating system. Then by the operating system and install. Now you have a new computer and a clean operating system. I like many on this site build their own system and clean install the operating system. Many can't or don't want to build their system but will install Windows if that option is presented to them. A couple Tutorials from the Windows 7 Forum and your on your way to happy computing.
