Do I need to use a Registry Cleaner?

I didn't buy yet but I ran a scan using Speedmax PC and it stated that I had 801 problems that needed fixing. When I did some research on Google most places stated not to use a registry cleaner that they have been known not to work and delete some or all your info plus messing your computer up more? What do I do? I was looking at doing this due to the fact that My Dell Laptop at times just shuts off during use I have no ideal why and about 4 times within a month period I was working on it and I got a blue screen and it just sat there then went off. It would boot back up ok each time I turned it back on but somethings wrong. If I need to use a registry cleaner etc.what would a good and reliable one be?
Thank You
Dana

What do I do?

Nothing.

The chances of those 801 errors causing anything worth mentioning on your PC is very small.

If you absolutely cannot help yourself and insist on doing SOMETHING, download and install CCleaner and run its registry cleaner AFTER backing up the existing registry. It's free and the least invasive registry cleaner--least likely to cause a problem.

But I'd probably do nothing at all. I definitely would not use Speedmax.

Start another thread about your PC's actual problems if you want to.

If you use a registry cleaner, you are likely to get more blue screens. You would be better advised to post the blue screen dumps here so that we can analyse the cause of those events. But start a new thread for the BSOD because there are some real BSOD specialists here that will have a look.

Against all recommendations - I've been using JV16 for several years, checking before I delete, and always saving the backup. On one or two occasions I was glad to have the backup and I wouldn't use a registry cleaner that didn't provide one.

I tend to use it after I've installed/uninstalled several programs. Sometimes I use the search command and search for leftover references to something I've uninstalled - they're always there. And every once in a while, maybe once or twice a year, I compact the registry and usually see a slight speed increase after doing so.

Lately I've been playing with Revo Uninstaller Pro but that's a little more aggressive on the registry end.

All this said - you must be very careful, backup first, and if in doubt, leave it!
