why does it take forever to shut down and start up my computer?

Heeeey,

So for the last three weeks, the time it takes for my computer to shutdown has taken extremely long. It went from ten to twenty minutes, to three to eight hours. I've tried the following:

-using disk cleanup
-using ccleaner
-defragmenting my disks
-deleting useless files
-numerous scans by Microsoft security essentials and office depot tech support and mcafee antivirus
-chaanging the waittokillapptimeout apps (there are like 5 or 6 in there) to 1000
-adjust to best performance

My shutdown time has improved pretty rapidly, but when it has to install updates and shutdown it takes forever, or when I cant close an unresponsive program, shutdown and restarting times take
forever.

Welcome to Sevenforums! First, try going to start and typing msconfig and pressing enter. Then, go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything except your antivirus. Then, reboot your computer. Then you should hold down hte power button to shut off if it doesn't do anything after 5 minutes.

Hiya. Work through these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware which can smother Win7 on low resource machines. Especially establish a Clean Boot to get all of the freeloaders out of startup.

I see you're running the most problematic AV we see here, MucAfee. I would uninstall it and install in it's place free Microsoft Security Essentials.

Once you've worked through all of these steps here are other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Britton30 my system restore doesn't show Angy restore points to before that happened..

Trying startup repair now.

I cant download malwarebytes until I get my Internet problem fixed sadly..

Hopefully the tips you guys offered will work.

Well, since last Sunday I couldn't connect to my network or any public networks in my area. I troubleshooted and it said that my Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address is invalid. So now whenever I try to connect to a network i get a message saying that I have limited connectivity to the network.

Hey guys, I uninstalled mcafee today, and instantly the shutdown time has increased like tenfold! Now I know. Never ever install McAfee ever again.

You will also notice a big improvement if you increase your ram to 2 GB and even to 4GB if the mini permits.

Two biggest changes you can make to speed up your mini in general:
1. increase the ram,
2. use a SSD

Now do you have an internet connection?

I hope you meant decreased shut down time.

McAfee is one suite which doesn't play well with W7, there will be disagreements, but I use Norton and it has worked well. Others to try are Comodo and MS Security Essentials.

britton30 LOL yea, i meant decreased xD I have MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and Malwarebytes, but I do have a norton 360 that is waiting to be installed. Not gonna let it go to waist. Plus I love 360. It always helped me before.

Do not install Norton.

You already have the very best, namely, MSE. You can only get yourself troubles by installing norton.

Download the manual for your computer. Each computer is different. Go to Dell's website. They have excellent documentation and support.

An SSD is a solid state drive. A HDD is a a hard disk drive.

You should price out 128 GB SSDs. They aren't cheap. The decision will be up to you. I have a laptop and a netbook and a ssd in both and believe that the money was well spent.

Here's from your manual for RAM replacement. It takes DDR2-1333 2GB maximum. Documentation Beware you have to remove the keyboard to access your RAM module.
