ok So here is my situation. I have installed 7 64 bit as a dual boot with vista ultimate. I have it installed on a seperate partition. now I want to trash the vista and run 7 only.

so here is my questions and maybe somone will have an answer.

because vista is on my primary system partition if I format it will it kill my ability to boot. which is what it used to do when I tried this with xp and 98 way back in the day. is this still the case with the newer systems that use the NT Kernal.

if it will compromise my ability to boot can I migrate 7 to the primary partition using a third party software.

or am I forced to reinstall it?

There are a number of options here:

Using the copy function on a 3rd party (free) partition manager, or imaging the 7 partition with Macrium free edition - then restoring the image to the first partition.

Please post a screenshot of Disk Management.

I use Acronis to do the same thing. but there is also the bootmgr that must be repaired if you format the original partition.

1. suggest a full backup of Win7.
2. format c:\ this elimates Vista.
3. boot to DVD clean install Win7 (about 24 min).
4. install the program you use to make FULL Backup
4a. I use Acronis Boot Disk, then restore Win7 back to the clean install.

5. takes less than 55 min for me...

No more Vista and Win7 the way i currently have.

Hello Balthzar, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums. Your questions are welcome here.

Perhaps you could glean some ideas from the solutions offered there?

I'd probably just use Ghost to do a partition to partition copy, overwriting Vista with Win-7.
Then in the future, never put two OS's on the same HD and you'll never have this problem again.

Cheers Mate!
