Half images from thumbnails

Suddenly, I am getting half greyed out images when I click on a thumbnail. Had 25 out of 67 on a card I just uploaded and thought it was a corrupted card but just tried to open an image from several months ago and the same thing happened - only get the top half of the image. Not always half, might only be a third.

Does not matter where the pics are - I have two hard drives and it is affecting both.

Ideas, suggestions?

most likely the image data is corrupt--however--try opening images with a different image editor (like photoshop)
