Today I had a BSOD on my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1525, which happened while waking up the laptop this morning. This is the second BSOD the machine has encountered, the first was on 6/1/12 and I did nothing at the time as it was the first time.

System Info:
Dell Inspiron 1525 about 4-5 years old
OS: Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed about 1 month ago (fresh install)
Vista was installed when purchased; have had no issues until today.

BSOD Info:
Prob Event Name: BSOD
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Local ID 1033
Additional Info (hopefully I counted the zero's right)
BSS Code 77
BCP1 000000000000001
BCP2 0000000080EC800
BCP3 000000000000000
BCP4 FFFFF880039B5900
OS Version 6_1_7600
Service Pack 0_0
Product 768.1
Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\minidump\070712-27190-01.dmp
C:\Users\Bethany\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-54740-0.sysdata.xml

A few other things that may be worth mentioning:
* I tried to find a driver after going to Devices & Printers>Properties>Troubleshoot
* Did this after trying to print some BSOD material and noticed printer did not work
*Printer had worked fine until today (networked HPPhotosmart D7460)
* The one strange thing I have noticed since putting Win 7 on the laptop that had not happened prior was that randomly, throughout the day, the system will, for a split second, minimize whatever you are working in and go to the home screen, then a few seconds lator go back to what you were working on. Sort of like a flash on a camera.
*When I saw the "files that might help describe" shown above, the second looked related to temperature. When this happend the laptop had been on for several days and may have been hot. Can see this overheating the laptop but not affecting the printer.
* Other than not being able to print (even though the printer still shows but just shows as offline and unable to correct) the laptop is running as normal (have been using it all day on the net and MS Office functions).

That is all I can think of to go on at this point. I have attached the requested files and appreciate in advance any help to correct this.

Hello,

I see your BSODs started about 5 days after you installed Windows 7, which makes me almost suspect a firmware issue. Try installing this BIOS update: Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

It's not too much newer than your current version, but it's worth a shot for sure. If that doesn't work, post back here and we'll start on some hardware diagnostics.

Thanks for the advice. Want to add a few more things to my original post. I spent some time yesterday and today trying to troubleshoot even more before updating the BIOS as I have never done that before and I have some trepidation about tinkering with the BIOS (but willing to give it a shot if you could point me to some good, easy directions on how to do so).

I noticed the issue of printing a few days ago when I tried to print something and could not.Being in a hurry then I cancelled the print job and went on. The next day, when I posted the message above, I got the BSOD upon waking up the machine first thing in the AM. After I found your site, I tried to print out the directions on what to do when posting about a BSOD issue. I still could not. So I went into Devices and Printers to diagnose. That is when I found the yellow triangle beside the laptop. Today I uninstalled every but of HP software/bloatware on my laptop (the printer is an HP Photosmart D7460. After I finally got it all off and reinstalled the printer I can now print from the laptop so that issue is fixed ( there are three pc's on my home network: this laptop, my pc and my wife's pc. The other two were able to print from the printer fine so I knew it was something with this laptop).

But, even though the printing is now fine, when I go to Devices & Printers>Devices>LaptopPC I still get the error message by the laptop (yellow triangle with an exclamation point in the middle). I again tried to troubleshoot and got the same message: Base system does not have a driver.

Do you still think it is BIOS or something else? And if you do, could you point me to some good directions to update the BIOS on this machine (Dell Inspiron 1525)? Thank you again.

Flashing the BIOS is usually pretty simple. In your case, you will simply run the downloaded EXE file. Below the download button, you'll see an "Installation Instructions" section, which is pretty straightforward. That may also take care of the "Base system does not have a driver" issue, though more likely, it's referring to the chipset drivers. You can use the Intel Update Utility to check for chipset driver updates: Intel® Driver Update Utility

Ok, that was not too bad. I was able to update the BIOS with no trouble.
Then I went to the Intel Update Utility and ran it. It found one update, and INF Update Utility which I ran.
After the system rebooted I checked and still had the same error "Base system does not have a driver."

While looking for something else, I found this site that shows how to determine the file you need for that message:
How To Find Drivers For Unknown Devices In Windows

Looking at my information, it showed that the issue was a Ricoh (vendor id 1180) Memory Stick Controller (Dev ID 0592)
That is where the real fun started. Went to Ricoh and found nothing. Same with Dell. Did a search and came up with mostly sites that wanted to be paid for downloading drivers. I finally found a post for downloading drivers for Vista 64 bit which I had read somewhere would work with 7. Tried that and got a message that I was already using the best drivers. Still the same error message. Went back to the Dell site and searched again and landed on a driver for Ricoh r5c832. Wanting to double check this I went back to my device manager properties and double clicked on the Ricoh MMC host controller and it said the drivers were up to date. When I closed out of that to my surprise the yellow triangle was gone and apparently the system is running fine. Of all that I have no idea what actually fixed the system but the first time I noticed the warning gone (and the system had rebooted several times after trying updates) was after the last step. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your help. I do have one more question for you (and maybe not the right place to ask it but did not want to start another thread). Along with this laptop, I recently installed 7 on two other pc's: mine (which is what shows in my profile) and my wifes, for a total of 3. What AV would you recommend for our pc's? I have installed avast on mine and avg on the wifes and my next job is to get my newly build pc up and running. I've used Kaspersky before and it seems to get good reviews and don't mind paying for that if there is a difference in paid and free. I just thought you might have an opinion and maybe one specific to Win 7 64 bit.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear it! Hopefully the BSODs subside now...let us know if not.

I personally use and recommend ESET Smart Security, which is paid. If you get a 3-pack of licenses, it's not too expensive. Also, Newegg frequently runs sales on it. If you're fast, you may be able to score this for $40 with this promo code: EMCYTZT1879

Newegg.com - ESET Smart Security 5 - 3 PCs

The sale ends 48 hours after it started and I got the email two days ago, so it may be too late. Also note, though, that ESS 3 keys = ESS 4 keys = ESS 5 keys. Pick up a 3-pack of an old version for cheap, install it, and then use your activation code to activate the latest version (currently 5) which is available on their website.

Wel l crap, I had the BSOD again this morning. Here are some specifics:

* Happened again when waking the pc up about 6:45am
* Looks like Windows was installing some updates last night, got a popup asking me to restart the pc to finish.
* In Solve PC Issues there was a flag stating that Avast reports that it is turned off (had installed Avast until I could land on a better AV). When I looked at Avast it showed everything was running normally. Reading different threads it looks like a lot of blue screen issues are tied to the AV system. Not sure if this means anything.
* At least this time the printer is working (still) and no error message about missing drivers for an unknown device.
* Here was the message in the popup box:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:

C:\Windows\Minidump\071212-53851-01.dmp
C:\Users\Bethany\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-68000-0.sysdata.xml

I have attached the two requested files (ran again just now).

Thanks.

Just went to the action center and tried to "Turn On Now" Avast and it basically did nothing. It asked if I trusted Avast and I said yes but it went back to the action center without doing anything. Again I looked at Avast and it showed running normally

I see nothing in the dump to indicate a software problem, so I suspect a hardware or perhaps still firmware issue is at hand.

Shut down the laptop some night, and first thing when you boot it up, run Memtest86. You'll want to create the CD or USB drive beforehand so you're ready to go from the moment you press the power button. See here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Ok, will try that in the morning, after waking laptop up.

Quick question: what is the max temp I should be looking at for this laptop (you mention shutting
it down if it begins to overheat during the tests)? Want to keep an eye out for that.

I actually thought from the beginning this may have been caused by heat and recently
I have not turned the laptop off for a few weeks using it full time while getting my other
system up and running. Had never seen the BSOD before upgrading these pc's.

Downloaded Speedfan and right now the laptop is running in the mid-40 degree range and has been on
since about 7:30 this morning.

I ran the test this morning after waking the laptop up. It looked to me like everything passed.
The temps got in the mid 70's, the high I saw was 77 on the cores. Temp was was about 72
and the HDD was about 36. I saw in the folder a results folder so I zipped it and attached it.
I ran the test for about 2.5 hours.

Thanks

Looks like Prime95 passed okay. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is that there may be an incompatibility still between some lower-level driver and the OS. If the problem persists, I'd suggest reinstalling Vista to see what happens.
