Win 7 home premium x64 not picking up 8mg ram

I have an asus mother board with 2x8gb ram it is picking up that there is 8gb ram but only saying 3.98gb usable. I have removed one and rebooted the system and swapped them round and put them in both slots and it's picking them up but when both in together only 3.98gb useable. Any one got any ideas please??

Start :ar: System Configuration :ar: then click on BOOT tab :ar: Advanced Options

Make sure Maximum Memory is unchecked & set to Zero ( 0)

Besides what DocBrown suggested, there's another thing you can look out for:-

Check your BIOS settings, and make sure that the memory remapping feature is enabled.

From The usable memory may be less than the installed memory on Windows 7-based computers

Enable the memory remapping feature

Check the BIOS settings to see whether the memory remapping feature is enabled. Memory remapping gives Windows access to more memory. You can enable the memory remapping feature in the BIOS by booting to the system setup. See the User's Guide for your computer for instructions on how to boot to system setup on your computer. The name for the memory remapping feature may be different for different hardware vendors. This can be listed as memory remapping, memory extension, or something similar. Be aware that your computer may not support the memory remapping feature.

I have managed thank you all for your help. For reference it is An asus m5a78l-m lx mother board. The setting was in the bios, north bridge config. Memory config. I had to change to auto the channel interleaving setting. Thank you all once again for your help

I'm glad things are working for you again. How did your settings get off of auto in the first place? You mentioned you were a novice.

Well it seems the problem is still there, the os is ms windows 7 home premium 64bit sp1. CPU amd processor x4. Mother board is asustek msa78L-m LX(am3r2). I've checked the settings havent changed in bios or in system config and they haven't. I rebooted this morning when I saw it had reverted and checked if had changed. It hadn't. I let system start up and checked and it was giving me the 8gb. When got home checked and did the same as this morning but no joy.

It's looking like a bios driver problem, I haven't had chance to change the bios yet, they have brought one out to sort this out.
