Hi,

I've just bought a new Lenovo W520 laptop. I separately bought a OCZ Vertex 3 120go SSD. When i'm trying to install Windows 7 professional 64bits. I get an error on the first reboot saying : Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. I've tried different Windows 7 Iso. But it still dosent work. Any Idea? The SSD and the BIOS both have the latest firmware.

Did you remove the original HD with the installed OS before trying to install Win 7 on the SSD?

Have you looked in BIOS to set the boot order to use the SSD before the HD?

Are you trying to install Win 7 by booting the DVD, or did you start the install from within Windows?

Are you using a valid and genuine Win7 ISO?

Is the "error on first reboot", a reboot during the install process, or after the installation is complete?

I've removed the original HDD with the installed Os before trying to install a Clean Win 7 on the SSD.

The SSD is first in the boot order.

The SSD is set to AHCI mode.

I am trying to install Windows from my MSDNAA Win 7 Professional SP1 .Iso that i've burned.

The reboot is the normal reboot when you install win7 after the first part the computer reboot and i get the error instead of the normal starting of windows asking for Username and computer name.

I've tried with a Win 7 Iso i've downloaded online and it didn't worked either.

I am trying to install Windows 7 Professional 64 bits

Burn ISO to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed, or write to flash stick using Universal USB Installer with Win7 in drop down menu

Reset the BIOS to defaults. Set SATA to ACHI.

Test the SSD with maker's diagnostics. Plug it into the correct SATA port.

Remove all but 2gb RAM to try install. Test your RAM with memtest86 for 5-6 passes.

Post back or google verbatim error message.

I had bruned my ISO to DVD using Infrarecorder at 4x speed. Now trying with 2 gb RAM and BIOS to defaults with sata to ACHI.

If it fails i'll try from the usb stick. Maybe it's my iso that is broken

Hi,

The only drive in was the SSD and the USB bootable drive. I've tried with no partition made, partition made, the secure erase, without the secure erase. 3 different *.ISO of win7. I've finaly gave up, ordered the Lenovo recovery cd and installed successfully Windows 7 on a HDD and put the SSD second while waiting for the recovery cd. I've been able to use the SSD as a second drive for programs and storage. I've tried to install windows7 by giving the specific drivers for the chipset but it only made me unable to install on the SSD and yes it was the specific one from intel.

I don't have anymore ideas. If you have some i'll be glad to try it. I wish the Lenovo DVD arrive soon!

Thank you for your help/time!

If you use the official ISO with SP1 and tool in Steps 1 and 2 here it should work: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Do you have an EFI BIOS? CHeck the BIOS Boot order for an EFI boot disk, remove it and set DVD drive first to boot.

I have the official ISO with SP1 and i've made the USB bootable drive frome the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool. I've checked for the boot order i've put a temporary priority for the USB key and the second is the SSD. Only 2 go RAM and no other drives. Windows is making error about drivers when it restart. I've tried to specify the drivers when you get to choose de driver you want to install on and give the ones of my Intel Chipset but it says it makes me unable to install on the SSD. I've verified online and it is the latest driver.

Hi,

Can you retry your steps, but this time try IDE mode in the BIOS?

Golden

In addition can you try DVD install? The driver prompt almost always means a bad installer since all modern AHCI storage drivers are in the installer.

Try writing ISO to stick again using Universal USB Installer.

What i've meant is i've tried to use the latest driver for the chipset from the manufacturer's website to see if that would fix the problem.

I've just checked golden's solution on the internet and i've found something from the OCZ website:

How to set up Windows on a VERTEX - OCZ Forum Wiki

it says : "VERTEX works best in IDE mode but AHCI is supported. "

Maybe that is the problem. I'll try an installation in IDE as soon as i get home (in 6 hours...)

The USB bootable windows is working fine i've been able to install perfectly on an ohter 2.5" HDD to be able to use the computer while trying to fix the problem.

Hi!

Finaly after speaking with OCZ and not being able to install anything on the SSD and an awful support from Lenovo, I've tried IDE, SATA, Only 2go RAM, DVD, USB bootable, Safe Erase from OCZ, Normal erase from windows, 3 Different ISO, Drive test doing fine, Upgrading Bios and SSD firmware, i've came to the idea of the problem with the sandforce interface. I've checked online and multiple persons had problems with disks with sandforce. I've RMA the Vertex 3 to Newegg and bought a Crucial M4 (a Marvel SSD). At my first Windows 7 professional 64 bits attempt, everything worked perfectly. Here are the numbers I am getting. I've checked online and that is around the average numbers. Thank you very much for you guys for your help!
