I have lots of them... I know they should not be deleted because they hold the registry. Here's the thing. I have them in my user folder, about 16 of them... in my root folder of C:\drive, about 6 of them, and strangely enough, some are on D:\ drive, about 5 of them. Where should they really be and which ones of these can i get rid of?

Hello bardos.

The legitimate ones for your profile are held in your specific user folder (C:\Users\(username)). The ones at the root of c:\ and d:\ may be backups.

If you want to be absolutely sure, copy all the ntuser.dat files from the root of C:\ and D:\ into another folder or drive and then delete them. Restore them if trouble occurs.

Here's some more information about those files from Microsoft's Technet and eHow.com if you're interested:-
