Microsoft has confirmed that the new Office 2103 will not run on older PCs powered by Windows XP or Vista.

"The new Office will work with Windows 7 and Windows 8," a Microsoft spokesperson said Monday in an email reply to questions about Office 2013 and Office 365. "Vista or XP will not support the new Office."

Users running those operating systems will not be able to advance beyond Office 2010, the suite that launched about seven months after Windows 7.

Of course it won't run on an older operating system. If it did there would be less incentive for people to buy Windows 7 or Windows 8. :p

Hi there

Fropm what I've seen of Office 2013 there isn't ANY compelling reaon to upgrade -- and documents will have to be compatible for YEARS and YEARS to come anyway with older versions of offive.

Unless I can kill that "White" stuff I'm not going to use office 2013,

Cheers

I'm still using Office 2007, it has all the features I need and I will be sticking with it for the foreseeable future.

The 2013 version looks incredibly bland. The pure white is dull, wonder if that's what the final version will look like?

Can't say I'm surprised at it not supporting XP as they're trying to kill it off. I still use it in a VM and still enjoy it.

I think they're trying to forget about Vista! :)

The only reason I installed it is because it's free xD
The last thing I need to buy is Office since I rarely use it, and mostly Word, but I used the 2010 beta until it expired, then occasionally used WordPad on 7, and now I can use Word 2013 until it expires, then back to WordPad xD

Besides, the most important documents, like my CV and PDFs (i.e. docs that don't need to be edited), are designed in Photoshop xD

But all in all, the 2013 version seems all about SkyDrive and cloud syncing, which isn't really that bad if you take the time to make those files private. Having those docs available on any device that supports SkyDrive means that I can keep, for example, my CV in my pocket instead of printing it out and carrying it with me to a job interview or something. It does get handy, but aside from that, I don't really see anything too appealing in the 2013 version.

Blinding, yes, but not appealing. I installed 2013 and opened Word to activate (barely found it by the way xD) and wanted to continue on writing a story I've been working on for some time. Five sentences later I had to look away for a moment and blink a couple dozen times - it gets awfully painful on the eyes to watch all the white.

COLOR SCHEMES Miscrosoft, PLEASE!

I last used Office as a self-employed printer, Pro 97. It was great and gave me my last career, together with Publisher 2000 and a wonderful HP A3 printer, I had a great setup which earned me a wage when I had become disabled. After retirement, my Office 97 disc was damaged and would not reinstall. I tried Open Office (sacrilege!) and found it had everything I need. It still does. I am never going back to a monolithic, bloated programme that costs a bomb and has more than I would ever need or want.

If I had been able to carry on using 97, I would never have found our how useful OOffice is. If Oracle ever does make it 'Paid for', I shall take a look at Libre Office.

That's really bad news they arbitrarily decide not to support their best operating system which after all limits their possible use an adoption. Don't know if there is anything really worth new in Office 2013 to justify an upgrade, some day I'll try the beta.

With every day less system compatibility (without any technical reason really) and that useless ribbon are compelling reasons to NOT upgrade beyond Office 2003.
Funny thing is that MS gives me even more reasons to use OpenOffice instead :p

Ha... they must be joking, less support for XP is a no brainer, but Vista? C'mon, even Millenium had more chance in life... I must not concern about it since I use 7, but some Vista users just love their OS, that is not fair.

Windows 7 should prevail because of it enhacements over prevous iterations, not because office 2013 will work on it... even worse, I hate that new interface, I suffered from office 2003-2007, OK, then 2010, great improvements... 2013? That is a no, no to me...

Sorry MS, we are going back instead of going forward...

P.S.: I need to say that I hate the UI because it reminds me of Windows 3.11 and its color schemes... I really had bad times with that OS :(

I love 2013 from what I've seen.

Always liked the ribbon from 2007, and I don't care about the colour scheme, just give me functionality!!.
Better integration with the cloud is a driver for me, I'm currently using Google docs, but I find that extremely frustrating and really not compatible with MS Office so anything MS can do to support this I'm up for. I use office all the time and the ability for me to access spreadsheets, ppt and word docs from anywhere is exactly what I need.

Office 2013 seems to bring no "WoW" factors to the table so for anybody running Office 2010 there isn't any compelling reason to switch.

Office 365 (the next iteration) I believe is going to be Cloud only - so I won't be using it.

Again what is this passion for "The Cloud" that Ms seems to have fallen madly in love with.

With a 32 GB micro sdHC card in my phone I can have / send / print docs anywhere anytime -- I don't need or want anything to do with the cloud.

When I go away sometimes I go to remote regions where there ISN'T any Internet or normal phone coverage -- only a Satellite phone will work. I can still work with a small netbook and a portable disk or two including the smartphone which is fine when I'm back in phone coverage.

I'm not sure either of how important document sharing really is outside corporate Lans. There's plenty of social networking sites where people can exchange stuff if they want to.

My data is MINE and I'm not entrusting it to some "Cheech and Chong" outfit on servers I know absolutely nothing about - still less have any say in what other content is stored on these servers which might get them pulled at a moments notice.

I get the feeling that rather like the saying "Los Angeles is 64 suburbs searching for a city" ( I actually like parts of L.A BTW) the Cloud is simply a concept looking for an application.

I think "Cloud Cuckoo Land" better describes the whole process.

Cheers
jimbo

Cheers

I coudn't agree more with this...

XP is out like it or not. People will not update their Office unless they have a need to. They will run what ever Office they have or want on Windows 7 if it can be done. Putting Office on Windows 8 to me would be a joke. How about this, a Operating System called Office that does nothing but Office procedures. No IM, web browsing, camera, joy sticks, email only through Office, no playing movies, music. No IT magic to stop all this stuff because it isn't there. Name it Just Office. If this happens I want 1% of the gross.

I am really getting tired of all the hate. Not just towards Office 2013, but Windows 8 in general.

I had my own doubts and prejudice towards all this, but I actually tried my best to use it the way it's supposed to be used and, most importantly, make the best of it. Just because one doesn't use all the new features doesn't mean one shouldn't use it at all, at least not in this stage while they're still just Previews and are free!

Yes, I cannot see a reason to upgrade from any older version of Office to 2013 either, but that doesn't necessarily mean that 2013 is bad in the first place.

A bit off topic now, but I'm getting the feeling that the hate towards Metro is the same, if not bigger, than the hate towards Vista... And this is for absolutely no good reason i.e. it's just blown completely out of proportions. Half the people that hate it didn't even try it, or if they did, they couldn't understand how to make the best of it, instead just trying to force it to act the way they want to.

If you want complete control of how you can f**k up your system, or even your whole computer, then use Linux and go nuts; Windows isn't like that, like it or not.
