Hi

I am having problems with my screen I think I just need the right graphics card driver. My graphics card is GeFORCE4 MX440-8X (128Mb), it is running on a computer with a Pentium 4 2.53GHz and win 7 professional. There is a problem with both the aero and the basic. I attached a picture of the desktop to show. And the resolution is stuck at 800x600.

I know that it is a very old graphics card and the processor is not great but it still should work. Any help would be much appreciated as I have spend a lot of time on this computer and have got no results.

BTW the picture is not mine but the problem is the exact same.

Thanking you

Ronan

Option 2 works good. You might have to install the latest version of Java to use the option 2, the installation procedure in inbuilt in the driver search procedure.

Hi Ronan490, Welcome to the forums, Unfortunately the GFX card you have is now a "legacy card " ,It will not run Aero on win 7. Aero needs directx9 and above to work correctly on win7, Nvidia last produced drivers for this card in 2003 and as sauch will never produce a new driver, With GFX cards now quite inexpensive it makes sense to upgrade to a newer model :(

Hi

Thanks for the replies

Archie: I tried Option 2 and it just keeps scanning for the graphics card and doesnt do anything (and i installed the latest version of java). And Option 1 does not have my graphics card.

Pebbly: Thanks for the welcome. I am aware it is a legacy card and that there will be no update for Win 7 but I also know of Nvidia GeFORCE4 MX440 "64Mb" graphics cards working with windows 7 on drivers that maybe are not exact spec but still work (or possible beta versions). And I understand that aero wont work, but neither will basic theme or classic theme work?

Anything else you would recommend?

Kind Regards

Ronan

AGP video card drivers won't install without a working AGP/GART driver, which is part of the chipset/motherboard. What is the make and model of your motherboard.

Unfortunately you're trying to run an unsupported card on an unsupported motherboard/chipset. QPI may have built the computer, but Intel made the motherboard/chipset which is the old Intel 865. One reason you can't find the chipset driver from QPI (if they even exist anymore) is that Intel never made one for it for Windows 7 and will not as they dropped support for that chipset a long time ago; to the point Intel doesn't even offer any drivers of any kind for it anymore, not even XP.

In most cases the generic Windows 7 AGP driver is enough, but not always. When it isn't you can usually get it to work by using the last XP version, but in this case even that isn't available anymore.

You can as pebbly suggested look at a new card, but if you can't get this one to install then it is likely that a new one won't either. Also it isn't the most cost effective solution as a new card will likely cost more than your current computer is worth (which sorry to say is anything over $30-40). This is one of those where it would be better to stay with XP until such a time as you get a new computer that is fully Windows 7 (and soon to be Windows 8) capable.

graphics card upgrade is not worth it as it will be very hard to get AGP version of supported card or even impossible :) because everything is pcie for some time now.
so youre stuck with default VGA driver, you may try to do compatibility mode for xp driver but there is no guarantee that will work.. still i noticed that youre using RC build of windows 7 why is that so? there is already sp1 :)
default VGA driver should offer better color set at least 16bit not 256color as it looks like from your screen shot.

Dude, that hardware (mobo+gpu) is not win7 compatible, time for upgrade or time to go back to XP, whoever told you it was supported told you wrong, since the card is DX7 or 8 and Win7 needs DX9 at least for aero.

you dont need aero to run windows 7.. on older hardware i set classic theme.
and it runs better than xp.

I tried the 71.90, 72.30 and the 91.31 forceware before I asked on this site and none of them work. I can't understand it.

As mentioned, Unfortunately your card is simply not supported and will not work correctly with Windows Seven. Age wise it's far too old told to work correctly in Seven.

graphics card upgrade is not worth it as it will be very hard to get AGP version of supported card or even impossible :)

Hard - yes, not impossible.

Since you're in India - realistically your best option would be Ebay.

I have an AGP 7600GS 512MB I'd give you if I could. I know for a fact that with some older Forceware drivers it works with Seven and supports Aero.

(I'm not sure If I actually still have the card or if I chucked it  )

Hi everyone

Thanks for all the suggestions, if im being honest I haven't got time recently to check some of them but when I do I will update you all on it.

Pebbly: Your right I did get the p and d mixed up, is it still relevant for me to download that chipset you recommended?

Storm13; Thanks for the info, much appreciated

Viadas: Its prob not worth it, especially considering the amount of time I spent tinkering with it but its also because of the amount of time I spent on it is also the reason I want to fix it. Its just one of the jobs that just completion is satisfaction. Also I have updated to SP1 now.

OldMX: I might go back to XP, but as Viadas points out it should work with windows 7 with the classic theme.

Smarteyball: I know its a bit of a dinosaur setup but it is just driving me crazy especially when people say "hard - yes, impossible no", it make me want to do it even more then. :-)
Thanks for the offer of the graphics card but its OK, oh and the flag is Irish but yeah I can see why you would think it was Indian..........first time I was every mistaken for an Indian and prob the last.

In an old computer I'm using a Geforce4 MX440 with driver version 61.77 for windows XP. Probably works well with your video card.

En un equipo antiguo estoy usando una Geforce4 MX440 con el driver para windows XP versión 61.77. Probablemente funcione bien con su tarjeta de video.
