hey all

i have built this comp recently. has been working fine for 2 weeks now.
but in the last couple of days has started BSOD. Random intervals and while doing random tasks eg.web surfing(writing this!)gaming and just nothing.

i am not comp savy so i dont have anything to go by so any help would b much appreciated. this definitely seems like a very helpful forum so look forward to hearing ur input.

just thought id say that ive done a memory test and a hard drive test on all drives.

thanks

Bare with us mate, our BSOD guys are caught up with a bit of a backlog atm.

In the meantime, do you recall updating any drivers / installing any apps etc that coincided with the time these crashes occurred?

Made any system changes, like adjusting services etc? Any BIOS adjustments?

Unfortunately there's nothing obvious in crash dumps as they all point towards system files and not the culprit.

If it's only been the last couple of days, it may be worth using a system restore point that hopefully goes back to before the issues.

Yeah smartey I noticed in some threads they seem overloaded.
I'm just a bit frustrated that's it's stoping me from using my awesome new comp! Lol

But as far as ur questions
Firstly I built the comp and it worked fine for a couple of days then I did fiddle with the graphics card but ended up just going to default settings when it bsod soon after I got it to a point that I was happy with. But it continued. Then I did a heap of windows updates and it was fine then for a good week and a bit. Didn't touch anything! Then it's started in the last couple of days.

So I re did graphics drivers and did some stress tests and that's where im at.
That's about the limits of my computer knowledge.

Don't blame ya mate :)

I assume you aren't overclocking the CPU yet? Every things at stock?

And what memory test did you run and for how long?

then I did fiddle with the graphics card but ended up just going to default settings when it bsod soon after

Define 'fiddle' :p

ie You were overclocking it?

If so, with what app? Precision, Afterburner etc

Your dxdiag report shows you're using the 301.42 Drivers. They've been a good set for my 670 SLI setup, so we can put video drivers aside for now.

What are you using to stress the cards (furmark, kombuster etc), and how did it go?

Then it's started in the last couple of days
.

The fact that it's working fine in safe mode tends to suggest it could possibly be software related. Unfortunately the crash dumps only show system files which didn't highlight the actual culprit.

I think a restore point might be worth a shot.

Type 'restore' in the start menu, select 'system restore' >next.

It should give you a few options. If you tick 'Show more restore points', hopefully there will be a RP that pre-dates when it got bad. Just follow the prompts from there.

The fact that it's not crashing in safe mode suggests a driver rather than hardware at this stage.

thanks for the reply mate
i did actually want to ask u a couple of questions from another tread that i read through so im glad u responded!
will try and answer ur questions first...

i havent touched anything in bios at all! so no cpu OCing.
on that point tho. unrelated question...
have seen u r the man to talk to about OCing and wanted to know ur thoughts about the preset overclock feature on the asrock boards? u can just select a OC that u want and it has preset settings for voltage and the like. is that a viable option? or is there to many variables for them to get those settings acurate enough?

back on topic
so i just used windows memory diagnostic... did it a couple of times. will do one with memtest86. unsure which one to download tho? are one of the free options suitable?

lol yeah overclocking!
using precision. i basically settled at 1250 hz at boost. was 1137 or something around there. and i wanna say around +600-700 memrory.
and i let the the precision do the stress test. then monitered it and ran through 3dmark11. it was fine and didnt crash. but it was the same day it stared to bsod so just put it back to default coz i dont even use the whole potential of the card yet with the games im playing at the mo.

so now as far as what ive read in this other thread goes(http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-...s-bsod-playing-games-recently-error-0xd1.html)
i noticed that he had the same motherboard as me and u pointed out about votage issues with theses boards. i was just wondering if there is a way to rule this out.
or if the probs im having really dont point to that at all.
would the motherboard play apart if it wasnt crashing in safemode or wouldnt the preasure be as exstensive so it wouldnt matter?

he did change though and is having issues again tho so im hoping that we can rule out hardware!
the cooler covers my memory as well so dont want to have issues there coz that will be a pain! espescially coz this is my first bulid and my mate who has built a few himself definetly did most of the work!

now as far as restoring goes. can i back some files some way???
coz i have a couple of 30gb and 15gb games that really would like not to download again! any info there would be great! and if its easy enough i really wouldnt mind going back to the start cause i dont have any important stuff on here yet.

thanks again and look forward to hearing from u!

Sorry for the delay.

I haven't used the feature so I can't say for sure how accurate or viable it is. Although it's been my experience that AUTO settings err on the side of caution and overvolt, or at least use more voltage than is actually necessary. (typically too much CPU voltage and PLL voltage). It might be okay to start with and then you simply tweak the settings later.

back on topic
so i just used windows memory diagnostic... did it a couple of times. will do one with memtest86. unsure which one to download tho? are one of the free options suitable?

I'm getting slack, lol - here's the link:
Memtest

Burn it to a CD or make a bootable Flash drive. Boot from the disc and it starts automatically. Typically 6-8 passes is adequate, but it takes a while. Let it run overnight while you sleep. (Unless you see errors straight away, which in that case you can stop the test).

I don't really put too much faith in the Windows memory Diagnostic.

lol yeah overclocking!

Each is card different but that's not a crazy OC. You can always get back to that once you've got your rig stable @ stock.

so now as far as what ive read in this other thread goes(http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-...s-bsod-playing-games-recently-error-0xd1.html)
i noticed that he had the same motherboard as me and u pointed out about votage issues with theses boards. i was just wondering if there is a way to rule this out.

or if the probs im having really dont point to that at all.

It wasn't so much a voltage issue with the boards, but more a problem with his board since we was failing a stress test @ stock volts. All the subsequent testing and upping the volts was to see if voltages played a part. As it turned out - they didn't. At this stage I couldn't say if yours is a similar issue or completely different.

It's the fact that after 2 weeks of working fine, it 'suddenly' started acting up is what is currently make me lean towards drivers. But the fact that the dumps aren't that helpful can also indicate sudden component failure. (I've had Ram crap itself after only a few weeks of solid running etc)

However you could attempt to rule it out by running a stress test on your CPU at stock speeds using the same test in that thread.

OCCT for stress testing.

CPU-Z to monitor voltage.

And RealTemp to monitor the temps.

Between running memtest and doing a CPU stress test at stock volts and settings, if something is 'obviously wrong' - these tests should hopefully highlight it.

If not, we're back to head scratching.

would the motherboard play apart if it wasnt crashing in safemode or wouldnt the preasure be as exstensive so it wouldnt matter?

Idle/browsing in normal and safemode uses roughly the same amount of 'grunt'. A stable safemode isn't a %100 guarantee the board/hardware is fine, but it's usually a sign that it 'may' be drivers that are loaded and used causing all the issues in normal mode.

he did change though and is having issues again tho so im hoping that we can rule out hardware!

Shit. I hadn't noticed that.

the cooler covers my memory as well so dont want to have issues there coz that will be a pain! espescially coz this is my first bulid and my mate who has built a few himself definetly did most of the work!

Understandable :)

coz i have a couple of 30gb and 15gb games that really would like not to download again! any info there would be great! and if its easy enough i really wouldnt mind going back to the start cause i dont have any important stuff on here yet.

Are they steam games? If so you can just copy the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps folder elsewhere.

If not, you can copy the game folder else where and then copy it back.

System restore will remove any installed apps etc that are installed after the selected RP. However while Copying the game folders back and forth should keep them working and save you having to download them again, they will disappear from add/remove programs, shortcuts etc.

Restore Points are also automatically pruned so the longer you leave it, the more likely you are to wipe out your last good RP.

so idid that and realised that it hasnt uploaded a new dmp file....
does this mean that one wasnt created?
it did the memmory dump when it into bluescreen...

Not all Blue Screens trigger crash dumps. Sometimes the PC will shit itself before it has a chance to write one.

hey smartey
all good mate appreciate the help!

so in just writing to say something else that while i forgot intially i sorta didnt wont to bring it up coz it makes me look like a bit of an idiot! lol
but when i was building the comp with my mate i went to plug the sata cable into the back of the ssd and slipped! subsuquently broke the plastic piece with the pins off. now we did manage to slide the pins back in and get it working. i thought that with that drive it was either working or not so didnt worry about it and hoped for the best but the other day it came up that it wasnt able to boot from the ssd and hadnt sevaral times.

aslo ive seen memory in the last couple of blue screens memory mentioned and had an error pop up on screen that some sort of memory was unreadable. and got a blue screen trying to load into safe mode moments ago.
so would it be worth either coppying everything from the ssd onto my other hard drive to see if that could b it?
would i be better just using the windows cd to that or making a mirror of the ssd?(this is where i get lost with comps!)
wondering if it might worth ruling this out to start with coz i know that is definelty not 100% how it should as far as hardware is concerned.

thanks again!

Ok some more info. Not great either!...for me
So I decided to a fresh install of windows on my 1tb hardrive.
So turned off pc and disconnected ssd.
Loaded up windows cd and formatted 1tb drive to put windows on. All good....
Windows starts expanding files... I think well this will take a bit! Go to the fridge to grab a cold one come back and blue screen!!!! While installing windows! How is that possible????
Anyway I haven't lost anything so I've gone back to ssd drive have downloaded memtest and running it now.
Has to be hardware right? Unfortunately...
Will let u know of memtest results. And if they are fine will do the occt.

It can't be temps coz ive monitered them in CPU and gpu tests and i am well under reccomended.
CPU didn't crack 45 degrees Celsius and gpu I havent seen above 53.

Any thoughts ppl????

so ive ran memtest86.
first run with all ram as is...errors bout 60% through. must b something wrong there then right???
anyway i took all but one stick out and left in slot 1. ran again. got through 2 passes fine. so i add stick 2 to slot 3 and run. bout 5% through and the errors start coming! so either stick 2 or the slot. so i put stick 3 in slot 3. and errors again. so im thinking slot 2 has problem.
so i take stick 1 and 3 out and put them in slots 2 and 4. more errors pretty well straight away. so i then take stick 3 out of 4 and put stick 4 in. now this time i get through about 2 and half passes all clear. so im thing i might have to dodgy sticks.2 and 3. so i leave the run going overnight and this morning i have more errors.
so i think from here there 2 options.
1. either i didnt teststick 1 long enough and it could b the problem as this has been in all the tests or
2. the motherboard is seriously stuffed!

Latest bluescreen said "bad pool error"... Something like that anyway.

let us know what u think!

Again, sorry for the delay.

Go to the fridge to grab a cold one come back and blue screen!!!! While installing windows! How is that possible????

Hardware ▼ (That's the 'fun' of trouble shooting - start with the obvious, software, test and then discover it's h/w all along  )

1. either i didnt teststick 1 long enough and it could b the problem as this has been in all the tests or
2. the motherboard is seriously stuffed!

Latest bluescreen said "bad pool error"... Something like that anyway.

All of your symptoms (plus the memtest failures) now highlight memory as the culprit. You don't need to worry about uploading any more crash dumps either. We've narrowed it down to being memory related) (Now to work out module vs mobo errors :p )

Unfortunately 2 passes isn't enough to get an accurate result. But for the quick slot test, it'll do.

* Firstly, to eliminate a timings/setup issue - have you enabled the RAMS X.M.P profile on the BIOS? That sets the timings and voltage for you.

(Also, do you have a link to the exact kit you are using?)

Typically the best way to determine whether it's a module/modules vs bad dimm slots is if there is one slot that all modules pass on.

IE:

If you use slot 1 to test all the modules one at a time and no errors are found on any module, then you can consider the modules to be fine.

From there you move to using a single module to test slot 2,3,4 etc
If a known 'good' module fails in one or more slots - then you have dodgy dimm slots/bad mobo. - RMA the mobo.

If you use slot 1 to test all the modules one at a time and discover errors on some, then it's the modules. - RMA the RAM

As a confirmation, take a known 'good' module and do the slot 2,3,4 test.

(It is possible to have both a dodgy module AND dimm slot. But I suspect you have either one or the other.

* If the machine fails to POST with a single module in slot 2,3,4 it's due to the 1155 socket 'needing' a module in a particular slot. I just cant remember atm.

Another question

Could a bios update affect the memory test???Compatabilty or stability with ram??
I'm running 1.3 and there is version 2 on the AsRock website...

It can. BIOS updates tend to add RAM compatibility and stability fixes. With the current info you've given me, I suspect it might be the motherboard. But I'd like to make sure first before saying start the RMA procedure :(

What to do now:

► Go to the bottle shop ;)

► Update to the latest BIOS

► Ensure the X.M.P profile is enabled

► Re-run memtest with a single module as mentioned above.

Unfortunately testing does take time. But RMAing the wrong component, only to have 'no fault found' takes even longer.

VM me when you're done testing mate.

Bloody Big Grin
First off thanks for reply!
And sorry to overload u with all the info and posts.

So just quickly I have updated the bios so maybe that will help.
And before I read this I had started the memtest again with the 2 sticks in slot 2 and 4 just coz that's what was in there.

Corsair Vengeance CML16GX3M4A1600C9B 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 [CML16GX3M4A1600C9B] - $115.00 : PC Case Gear

So that's the ram. Now I haven't seen anything to do with the XMP so will check after this test has done 7 passes.
If its something to do with the CAS numbers the test says 9-9-9-24 which is what is on the sticks.

Will get back to u with results!

Your modules are on the QVL, so they should be supported.

Since you've used both the X.M.P and manual settings - and all the slots are coming up bad, I think your motherboard might be a dud, which unfortunately means it'll have to be RMAed :(

When you initiate the RMA, mention that your RAM is on the QVL, you've done all the metest runs etc.

Bloody Big Grin
So i got bad news. my comp has been crashing again.
this time there is no blue screen but i loose monitor connection and sound.
it has happened a couple of times now but the last time i got the windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown with the error saying blue screen.
i will run another memory test today but i would be pretty sure it wouldnt b that.
so im guessing file corruption or something along those lines now. here is the latest crash report.

cheers
