is it possible to have local area connection with switch

without internet i cant play online
but i have a switch that 2 computers are connected to it
so is it possible to have file sharing, remote desktop, lan gaming
its ok if not all of them will work, i just need any of them

note: my 1st pc is windows xp, 2nd is windows 7

If it is just a switch and not a router there will be no DHCP to give out IP addresses etc. It will not be plug and play as Logicearth suggests. You will have to manually setup static IP addresses on each PC. A router would be a much easier and simpler solution even if you don't have Internet.

It will be plug in play. You do not need a DHCP server nor do you have to configure static IPs, Windows will handle that for you. In Windows it is called "Automatic Private IP Addressing" it will give you a 169.254.x.x IP.

Just FIY, I do computer networking for a living.

You dont need the switch at all...
Just connect the two computer with twisted pair with RJ45
