I like Windows 7 just as it is & don't see the need to upgrade if Windows 8 doesn't offer any desktop improvements. It seems both Apple & now Windows have moved to unify the desktop operating systems to be more like their phone & tablet OS. Just wondering if Windows 8 will offer any true desktop improvements?

I have Windows 8 (the pre-release) installed on a virtual machine. And as to the best of my knowledge, the answer is no. I'm sure that the final release will have some bugs removed and some other improvements made. But basically, what you see in the pre-release is what you're going to get in the final release. If I were to buy a new computer and had the option of Windows 7 or 8, I would pick 7 without hesitating. Having said that, you've got to release that is just one persons opinion.

Regarding desktop "improvements", to me, that comes down to how enamoured you are of touch-screen interfaces.

If you're planning on using Win8 on a Tablet, or on a desktop touch-screen, then it provides an interface more suitable to that kind of work.

But as for me, I don't want a "smartphone interface" on my desktop, so in that respect, it brings nothing useful to the table.

I did see a list on the Windows Eight forum about claimed improvements, but since those were mostly for touch screen or cloud computing (neither of which I use with my desktop), I didn't bother to save the list.

You could check over at eightforums.com to see what they have.

I don't see them as equal - I see both desktop & tablets having their own unique purpose. At the moment I don't see the need to upgrade. I'll slide on over to the Windows 8 side & look about. Thanks!
