hi,
I bought a new system. when I try to install windows 7, I get 0 MB free space. I used diskpart and got 512 bytes on disk 0 and no media on disk 1. I've connected both DVD drive and HDD to 6 GbPS port. ububtu was not able to detect HDD. UBUNTU was unable to detect HDD
the config is

  1. Asus P8Z77-M motherboard with UEFI enabledi
  2. WD 2 TB green hard disk

I would disable EFI. This is normally done by enabling Legacy BIOS or removing the EFI Boot disk from BIOS boot order. If this isn't sufficient read your Manual for how to disable EFI which is not needed and more trouble than it's worth unless you have a 3tb HD. You can have as many partitions as you want by limiting to 3 Primary and unlimited Logical.

Then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from the Win7 installer accessing DISKPART At PC Startup, followed by the command "Convert MBR" then "Exit." Click Install Now and proceed. Post back verbatim error message if any.

You could try moving the drive down to the Intel SATA ports. It should not be necessary, but would not hurt.

Does the drive show in the bios? Is it a previously used drive? I assume it is not SATA III? If you have disk 0 and 1, do you have two hard drives, or is one a flashdrive? Why were you using Diskpart?

The UEFI, so far, is not involved in your situation, but are you aware of how to boot a DVD to the MBR or UEFI version of the Install DVD?

You need to get the system to recognize the hard drive, and it should show up in the bios. Are your cables connected correctly? Could you have damaged a connector during the install?

I will try legacy BIOS. I Think its USB 3(WD20EARX). BIOS shows 2 TB hard disk properly :)

No USB 3 is the newest USB controller.

Are you sure you have an EFI BIOS?

Look for EFI settings like Enable Legacy BIOS, or in the BIOS Boot order is there a EFI Boot disk - remove it.

If none, then go the the Support Downloads webpage for your exact mobo model and read the Manual for how to disable EFI and install normally to an MBR disk.

I have the same motherboard he does, and it is UEFI. And as I stated before, you don't disable the UEFI bios, you just boot to and install using the MBR version of the Install DVD. And that board defaults to the MBR version, unless someone has changed the bios and set it to only boot to UEFI. And that setting would be on the Boot page, possibly under CSM options (UEFI and Legacy or disable Legacy or disable UEFI).

But again, he has not even gotten to that point.

UEFI works great....don't be easily dissuaded.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
So give him help to install in EFI mode if it's that easy. We need to learn this anyway.
From what I can tell, his system is not recognizing the hard drive. If it were a UEFI/MBR situation, he would receive some compatibility error or something about not being able to install on that type of drive.

If the drive isn't being recognized, it doesn't matter how you are installing.

Edit: It appears the -M version of the board does not have the AsMedia version of the SATA ports, so it looks like the DVD can be connected. But I will check to make sure.

I thought I'd already posted this. I will try with legacy BIOS once. EFI BIOS is able to detect full 2 TB hard disk.

it even stopped detecting hard disk all of a sudden! SATA mode selection is AHCI. should it be IDE or RAID?

Best to try AHCI first, then IDE if it fails.

You said you wanted to try Legacy mode now, correct?

Are you sure you're installing in Legacy (non-EFI) mode to an MBR disk? Again, this requires enabling Legacy mode and/or removing EFI Boot Disks from BIOS boot order.

Wipe the disk with Diskpart Clean Command first.

here are the screen shots.

First image shows 2TB hard disk. second one in advanced mode shows 0 MB for same. I don't understand how this can happen. I set all CSM filters as Legacy only.
