it says "windows could not check for updates automatically (important)" and when i click on the action center icon, i get this 8007370B error code. when i google it, absolutely nothing helpful comes up. some microsoft help site suggested this tool below, but it does absolutely nothing. do i have to reinstall windows? i really don't want to do this. how bad would it be and/or how long could i go without updating windows before it becomes pretty unsafe from a security perspective? i have my own active anti-virus.

System Update Readiness Tool that fixes Windows Update problems is available for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

You could go awhile honestly if you know what to avoid and whats clean. Here try this though, original link:http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...heck-updates-automatically-5.html#post1786779

This may have just fixed it, from the techguy forums:

Go into Windows Services, and stop the Windows Update Service (don't disable it, just stop it).

Control Panel (classic View) Admin Tools>computer management>Services.

Once it opens, scroll down to "Windows Update" double click it and hit the stop button in the window that opens, when it stops, click OK and then close the services window.

Now navigate to this location and delete the folder "SoftwareDistribution"

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Restart the PC and see if WUP works now.

tuffluck,

Help us to help you by:
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.

i did this at the time of this posting, and it worked. but now it has stopped working.

i built my own computer and had faulty RAM/Mobo. I RMA'd those parts, and when the Mobo came back is when i posted this. well, since then the mobo has crashed once again, and i RMA'd it again. when it came back, my windows 7 again will not let me update and none of the listed suggestions have worked.

does anyone know what else to try?

actually i wound up downloading "windows updates downloader" instead. you can download all updates in recent history and select the ones you want to install based on posting date. i just grabbed all (like 7 of them) that have posted in the last month before i started having this problem (again). no one is responding so i guess no one cares, but if anyone does a search in the future this will be helpful i hope.

sure, but i guess it really is not a solution, just a workaround. honestly i find it really annoying that there is no actual solution from microsoft. even a repair installation won't work. that's very annoying. why would windows updates not work anyway? especially if the copy of windows is legit and activated.

There are all sorts of things that can cause Windows Update to return errors. Here's a couple of common ones:

  • Interference from AV (be it firewall, or file protection)
  • Hard disk faults (can cause registry corruptions - example)
  • Bugs in Windows Update (there are far too many 80B0100 errors around for it to be normal, so we think that there is a bug somewhere)
  • Registry cleaners (caused 2500+ errors in this thread
There are lots of other causes, those are just a few that came to mind. MS is potentially responsible for one of the above, if our suspicious are correct, but the rest are third party software.

i use avast, but i have not ever used a registry cleaner on this computer. i guess it could be a hard drive, but nothing became problematic until after i got my RMA motherboard back. even though i didn't change the hardware at all, windows somehow probably got buggy and thought the chipset got reset. a fresh reinstall is just such a pain, especially because only the OS in on the SDD and everything else is on an HDD. i guess if that windows updater tool works, for now that will be enough for me.

After changing the motherboard you may need to reactivate your system with Microsoft. Sometimes even changing the motherboard with the same kind you will have to reactivate.
