Solved Laptop connects to wireless router but with no internet access

I have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit that I've owned for just over two years.

Last night, after a couple of hours using the internet, the connection stopped. The wireless router still had an 'Excellent' signal, but it also said I had no internet access. All of the other wireless devices in my house connect to the internet perfectly, including when right next to the laptop.

I've tried disabling the firewall and resetting the computer a few times, but nothing seems to pick up the internet access. The troubleshooting guide tells me that it is a problem with the wireless modem, but quite obviously that isn't true.

I haven't installed anything on the computer for several months, and I have already ran a full virus check. Can anyone help me? Thank you in advance!

I've just tried connecting to the internet through an ethernet cable but even that doesn't work. The problem is obviously internal, but I can't seem to find the cause of the problem anywhere.

Might be your ISP!! Have you got access to the router?

Have you power cycled you modem?
Tried a factory reset on modem.
Run an ipconfig at CMD prompt and see what it tells you?

Okay your getting a valid IP.
Have you tried pinging other PC's in the house, or your default GW
At CMD type ping 192.168.0.1
Should look like this:

This shows that the PC and Router/Modem/AP are communicating.

That must be the problem then!

It repeated "General Failure" four times before that result popped up, btw.

I'm thinking its a problem on your laptop. NIC might of let go. (Network Interface Card)
You have connectivity with other devices obviously...your posting on here.
You can't ping your D/G
Have you tried a different cord/port on Router?
Try pinging again

Does your ICON in Taskbar look normal, or is there a Yellow triangle on it?

Does your modem,router have an usb connection that you can connect through.

All my other devices have connectivity apart from my laptop. And there is a yellow triangle on the network icon in the taskbar.

I have tried using an ethernet cord directly from the router but I still didn't receive a connection, if that's what you mean. Pinging the IP using it produces the same result of four failures. Plugging the cord into a different port in the router also has no effect.

I'm fairly certai the issue is caused by the Network Interface Card now, but is this a problem I can solve from the desktop or will I need to take in for repairs somewhere? I have three devices under my Network adapter folder in the Device Manager:

-Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet
-Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card
-Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Can you try disabling the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptor in Device Manager.

After that save the file below, unzip and run the reset file, this will fix any problems related to the network stack.

Have you tried to update the driver for this connection?

Do you have iTunes installed on this system?

What type of security and encryption are you using, should be WPA2 security with AES encryption.

According to the ipconfig you should be online.

-Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet is where you plug into.
-Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card is the WIFI adapter
-Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter is the Windows 7 Adapter for WIFI
Since you have no connectivity I think the NIC is toast.

I would just go purchase a Wireless usb adapter and connect through that. Taking it in to a shop could be rather pricey but it's up to you. Over here you can get one for around $20 CAD

Just as a reference

Actually the Msoft virtual adaptor is only used for sharing the wireless connection and tends to cause connection problems on a regular basis when it's enabled.

I would not give up on the adaptor until after restoring the system using system restore, or restoring from a previous system image or worst case try reinstalling the Op system as I seriously doubt the onboard NIC just went bad.

Firstly I want to apologise in advance for piggy-backing off this thread but I'm experiencing the exact same problems and no real idea how to fix it.

All other devices can connect to the network with ease (posting this message from my Father's laptop) but my Dell XPS 17 refuses to gain any internet access despite being connected to my network.

Had the laptop for just over a couple of months and everything (connection-wise) was working fine up until last night. Its very odd.

I have updated the drivers on all of the Network adapters.

I do have iTunes installed, and it has been telling me that something like iTunes Helper 7 was faulty and the iTunes needed to be reinstalled, but I just assumed it was unrelated.

There's apparently no security but a WEP encryption type (I didn't set up the network though).

Ok first, most every Windows 7 driver needs to use WPA2 security with AES encryption, you will need to go into your routers wireless settings to ensure those settings are correct. You will also need to make those changes in the wireless profile in Windows for this connection. Just go to the Network and Sharing Center, right side under Manage Wireless Connections, make adjustments to the wireless profile there.

As for the iTunes, iTunes installs a network interface that causes problems on Windows systems on a regular basis, it's called Bonjour and you will want to disable the service in Windows services. You can get there by typing services.msc in the run box.

Let me know these two adjustments have any effect on the connection problem.

The problem is solved now, and I'm not really sure why! I tried resetting it one last time, and then my computer installed some random updates and the internet seems to function fine now. I'm a bit confused as to why it did this, considering I checked to see if I was missing any updates, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth!

What exactly did you do, I'm useless with computers and fear without help I'm buggered.
