Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP Standard VGA?

Hello all! I really enjoy this forum. You are all very knowlegeable.

I am having a problem. The MOBO I am currently running only has an AGP slot for my graphics card. So I purchased a Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP card. I am not planning on running any high intensity games or anything of that nature.

I have attempted every possible solution to install the driver for that card in Windows 7 but Windows 7 keeps defaulting to standard VGA driver:

1. I have run the latest version of Catalyst with the hotfix 9.9 released just a couple of days ago (as well as every other version back to Catalyst 9.6)
2. I have tried to upgrade the Standard VGA driver in hardware settings and it keeps telling me I have the most up-to-date Standard VGA
3. GPU-Z shows all the pertinent information regarding the card

Catalyst seems to install correctly going through all the processes, but when I access the Catalyst control panel, my options are very limited with almost all options greyed out. All video playback, in any type of media, using every possible player is choppy, pixelated, grainy. I have loaded every possible codec I believe.

I spent a lazy weekend trying everything... which is fine...that is how I have learned about computers. But I am truly exhausted on everything I can think of. I have searched and searched in this forum and many others and not found anything.

I know I do not have a top-of-the-line card and that AGP is a withering standard and does not set well in the computer world. But it is what I have. I am just tinkering with Windows 7 and this older machine so it is not pressing.

Can anyone point me down an avenue or thought process that maybe I have missed? Any suggestions would be so helpful. I do thank you all in advance.

Leave your system as is. Don't uninstall anything.

Extract the hotfix driver .exe (run it) to the default c:\ati folder that it places it. After running the .exe and doing that, and before it actually installs, close the installer program.

Now go to the device manager and install the driver manually for the card that you just extracted. Find the driver manually while doing so. Don't tell Windows to find it for you.

Enjoy your installed driver.

Worst case scenario, you have to add a line in the .inf for your card, using the card's hardware id, but that is probably not going to be needed.

OK so at that resolution some video driver is working. Let go into device manager (type device manager in search) go to the display driver and make sure its under display driver. Right click the tab and get the properties.. what driver does it say? does it say working properly? is there a driver anywhere with a yellow triangle on it?

Let us know what device manager looks like ok?

Ken

Thanks TorrentG. I have not tried that exactly per se but I have installed just the driver and pointed the device manager to update the driver from my manually chosen folder and got the message "You are using the most up-to-date driver" which is the standard vga driver. Will doing it your way do something else?

ZizZag there are no yellow exclamations. And it says Standard VGA driver in the device manager and it does say it is working properly.

And I agree with you regarding the resolutions as the higher resolutions were not offered prior to the card install. That is one reason this is so baffling.

In the device manager, choose properties while right clicking on your card. Then go to details tab. Make the property selection box say hardware id. Now tell me the exact 4 digit number directly to the right of dev_

I will make you the proper inf for your card to replace (overwrite) what you already have (where you already extracted) and you should be well off after a manual install then. I will rapidshare it and post back after you.

Here. I made it for you already. All you have to do is open the .inf in notepad and add the 4 digit number yourself at the very end of the first line (your card) of the [ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.0] section. Then save and copy this over the .inf you already extracted. Then manually install.

Any further help or if it went great, please post again. Good luck!

And about the o.p. - " I am not planning on running any high intensity games or anything of that nature."

On my 3850, although it is overclocked from HIS by a lot and then I manually overclock it a lot too (to 810 mHz GPU 2250 mHz effective memory) using ATI Tray Tools, I play games like H.A.W.X. DX10.1 on maximum settings at 30 to 40 fps with drops to 20+. You should have an a very decent card there, especially overclocked and cooled properly. AGP slot can game for sure. My rig is proof. Sure I want a faster system with PCI-E but this is alright.

You're welcome.

Yeah, because ATI gets lazy and forgets to include certain cards for whatever particular reason. Maybe they don't want to support, maybe it's a mistake, I dunno. Your guess is as good as mine. Once you edit the new .inf and install, you'll forgive them lol.

Well they should kick you a few sheckles from their general operating fund for keeping peeps like me from returning their stuff and telling them to keep it.
