Solved Felix Baumgartner's Jump into the History Book...

Felix Baumgartner Record-Breaking High-Altitude Jump:

The jump was supposed to happen today, but weather conditions delayed the attempt. The team expects conditions to clear up considerably by Tuesday. If so, around dawn, a huge helium-filled balloon will lift off from Roswell, N.M., carrying Baumgartner and his custom-built 2,900-pound (1,315 kilograms) capsule to an altitude of 120,000 feet (36,576 meters).

I happened to cruise by the Discovery Channel (DC) this afternoon when I noticed DC pre-empted programing this afternoon just for this event.

So......Wherever you are, whatever channel you receieve DC on depending on your particular service (On our FiOS its channel 120)

Stay alert! there is to be up to a dozen cameras recording the event. They will all be on a 20second delay in case of problems.

I ran across this same info early this AM Steve, very interesting. This guys name is Alex Baumgartner, Kittinger made a 20 mile jump in 1960. I can't imagine a man, by himself, breaking the sound barrier.

My apologies to you Gary, and to Baumgartner/Kittinger in my haste last evening (I had too many irons in the fire) I got Baumgartner mixed up with Kittinger. I have made the corrections.

Yes, all previous attempts man has had air/spacecraft, and cars to protect him.

It will be approximately a 23mile jump, that's like going from Forth Worth to the Texas Motor Speedway!




Looks like Thursday will be the next time to try.

Thanks, interesting stuff Steve. I had been wondering how the capsule gets back. I assume the balloon will burst at some point or be released via radio control. After watching that video and the animated one, I found the parachute for the capsule. Maybe I'm dense, I wondered why the tether to the balloon is so long. this explains that.

That is still part of the balloon.

I would have to look into the balloon and capsule retrieval, but from past experience one reason the "Craft" looks so long is as the balloon rises the decreasing air pressure allows the balloon to expand.

Size, volume and shape: The balloon for Felix's mission from the edge of space will be nearly 30 million cubic feet in capacity - 10 times larger than Joe Kittinger's balloon in 1960.
At launch, it will be tall and thin, stretching 55 stories high. As the balloon ascends, the helium will expand and the balloon will slowly fill out to an almost completely round shape:
Length of uninflated balloon before launch: 592.41 feet. Height of balloon at take-off: 550 feet. The height from the top of the balloon to bottom of the capsule will be: 695 feet. Size of balloon at 120,000 feet: Height 334.82 feet / Diameter: 424.37 feet

If you notice when it is launched, there is a lot of extra special polymer plastic and it doesn't look like the balloon is filled to capacity.

What happens to the balloon after Felix jumps?
After Felix has landed, Mission Control will trigger the separation of the capsule and balloon, so that the capsule can descend under its parachute. A nylon "destruct line" will release the helium so that the balloon returns to Earth. Then, the team will gather the envelope into a large truck, a process that can take several hours.

Depending on the value of the object that the balloon is helping to ascend, retrieval can range from a free-fall to parachute descent.

When NOAA sends weather balloons up the Radiosonde comes back by parachute, if you ever find one there will be instructions on it asking the finder to please return it to NOAA

Yes the balloon looks very empty at launch doesn't it? It's amazing how it expand to the size of a small moon in the upper atmosphere.

Now I have to remember to get up and try to see it at launch.

If you have it, go back to the link, and left click on the address up in the address bar in your browser, it should all turn blue.
Then right click and paste.

OK, Steve, I know how to post a link...if it's available. The problem with the video is it is on a page full of pictures and videos which open in a flash-like window on the same page while the URL stays the same. That's why I can't link it.

At 0:18 there is a brief sequence of the balloon being cut loose. There is a link in the upper right of the video to get this link.

The pixs I'm showing were obtained by allowing the video to run and then taking a snip after pausing the video.

I saw the tools in the upper right corner, but I've never known them to work properly (There are too many OS/Browser/Web Site quirks), and the one that says it can link means to the video, not just a moment of the video.
Pausing and then taking a snip is the only way I know of to reliably take pixs of videos.

The first one is at 0:18






This last one was right before CapCon relayed that there was an unexpected problem at 0:24 of that video.
It was difficult to time that to take the snip.

Been up since 0 dark 30 (06:30edt), local news has Felix going at 10:45am presumably EDT, I think they are woefully under-informed (See next post below).

Checked Home | Red Bull Stratos and as I post this, launch is in 109minutes at 7:29am MDT Roswell, New Mexico, U.S.A. weather and forecast With Felix making the jump approximately 3hours later.

That would make it a 9:29am EDT launch with Felix jumping at 12:29pm EDT

I checked our Discovery Channel and they are running a six hour program from 9am EDT to 3pm EDT today (10-14-12).
I did not find anything about the attempt on their site.

Weather hold. Launch window opens @ 8:45 MDT. Wind too strong at top of balloon. Team optimistic conditions will improve.

Maybe my local channel did know something, my time is now 10:45am EDT for launch.

The Discovery channel is airing a "Mythbusters" re-run,, even though my programming guide says Live-Stratos.

I guess they will wait until sure, have to pay the bills you know.

I caught a live promo to the launch on my local channel and the caption read that they may be going to the live feed at 9:16am MDT.
That would be 3:16pm your time boo.

The "media" probably has a separate live media channel, NASA would have one for all their manned flights, but not here.
