Many Thanks for Many Years

Greetings All,

Today I pulled the trigger in finally deciding to join "Forums."

It's taken awhile to make that decision inasmuch as my visiting here has occurred many times over many years and, certainly, beyond just one OS release.

In this Tech/Web World to which all of us have somehow contributed, over the years it's been nice to find one consistent, almost perfectly correct source within which to find some of the best doggone Windows, computer-tech advice and information found anywhere.

And should I also mention "best 'computing' brains" to go along with the above?

Joining Forums wasn't altogether difficult and, beyond attempts at distinguishing the squiggly letters and successfully (a second time) answering the anti-spam question, filling in the other "required" blanks was easily, if not painfully accomplished (one, well, THIS one finds it difficult to admit, much less now remember the COBOL on which he long, long ago cut his computer teeth).

Despite yet another reminder of time's passage, it truly is my honor to become a member of a resource whose utterances I have used for the better part of . . . well . . . I really don't know . . . other than, say, one heckuva long time.

I can say, "thank you" and mean it.

Now, hopefully, I'll also be able to correctly pass along to others some of the stuff I've learned as a result of visiting here.

Passing along knowledge is that which allowed us humans to get ahead, you know, and in which the members of this forum have done a really marvelous job, too.

Thank you.

DC Williams

I Like My Spec System, Too

lol I like your system specs :) welcome to SF!

. . . and is the reason I cited it specifically, having an additional five Dells of varying nature within no more than five steps. Add another 10 steps to that and we're talking Dark Ages, with most still-operable, very early Dells.

One more step and that gets one to a TI 386 that I just can't bear to trash (though I once trashed a TRash 80).(Well, on second thought, it tended to first trash cassette tapes more often than I freaked. Though I did freak more and more with each tape.)

Man, that TI 386 was a huge leap in computing power - along with its 20mb HDD (!!) -- replacing an 8088 "portable" with a 5mb HDD (!!!) that, as a brother-in-law said decades ago while carrying it from my hospital bedside, "Now I understand why they're operating on your back."

Ah, but my old Workhorse Dell 9100, despite having I3's to I7's and, even, two Dell 1340's (precisely alike excepting respective service codes -- the ultimate backup!) is still a favorite. So far, I've been able to throw just about anything at it and it just keeps on keeping on.

And speaking of which . . . it's time to refocus on a problem or two for someone who thought "back up" only applied to a daily pre-work routine involving a four-wheeled computer.

MY Best To All,

DC

Welcome.

I'm curious though, since you say you have been visiting the forums for years, why the hesitation from joining?

Well, Strollin, probably due to my hesitancy to just merely join anything and everything calling itself a "forum" or, more particularly, a "chat."

For instance, while I've got a Twitter account, rarely do I twit (yes, I know, but I believe they avoided using that very word for the obvious reason of my using it).

Please understand that I honestly have no objection whatsoever that others utilize the means, it's just that I don't. One could accurately say such is like aversions to certain foods or, say, state fair rides.

Years ago this user was among the privileged few (which I mean sincerely) who were part of a major software maker's alpha and beta gangs, the last product I worked on being a no-longer-used chat client that revolved around a comic book-like theme.

By the time of that particular beta I'd already pretty well soured on forums (and chats), mainly because of those whose primary intent, if not "talent" was only to obstruct and disrupt.

Giving the chat another go for the software beta's sake proved instructive, learning that those who would do whatever they could to injure others seemed to be an inescapable number if not mental state. (Indeed, a ventured thought is that those who are into "cyber bullying" may well be of the same ilk, "pushing buttons" merely for the sake of such without consideration of those on the other side.)

While once again expressing my sincere belief that participation in anything is squarely in the personal likes or dislikes arena -- I'm really big on using the "off" or "channel" knobs -- attitudes focused on disruption rather than construction is something I choose to do without. And while there likely are those who would cite the exercise of personal freedom in seeking to do such things, I assert the same freedom in choosing to do without.

Fortunately for me and others of similar mind, Seven Forums provides an arena to communicate that demands its members adhere to a code that expects civility and respect to be exercised between fellow participants.

The other night, in the midst of my epiphany that led to registering herein, among other things I realized Seven Forums as a whole had long adhered to its demand.

Oh, I'm sure there are those who've deviated. It's called being "human." The good news is that Seven Forums appears to frown upon regular exercises of such.

Thank you for seeking my thoughts, Strollin. That's cool.

Best Regards,

DC
