another one is DVDFab.

Really that along with DVDShrink is all you need to make backups of your DVDs. DVDShrink cannot backup many new titles because it hasn't been updated for some time.

Another one is called AnyDVD. Free trial but if you use it for more than 14 days (I think) you have to pay. AnyDVD and DVDShrink make a good combo for those titles that DVDShrink can't handle alone.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
I use a combination of DVDfab HD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. The first one removes and copy-protection, which is great for ripping my legal DVDs to .mkv files for my HTPC, and DVD Shrink will handle the compression to let the files fit on a standard blank DVD.

I use DVD Fab HD to rip the movie, FixVTS to fix any issues with scrambled content on the disc and DVD Shrink to shrink it down. I then burn onto DVD rewriteables, watch them and record back over the disks. I use this process to better utilize my time and my Netflix subscription. This way I can watch the movies when I get around to it, or horror/suspense movies when my wife is in bed early rather than when Netflix ships to me.

DVD Shrink 3.2

It's freeware and I use it to copy all my DVD's to my HTPC.

Download DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 - DVD Shrink - A FREE software to backup DVD disks ! - Softpedia

In my country copying legally bought DVD's for own use is legal.

Greetz

Oky thanks I am using that shrinker it only shrinks it to 4.2 gig I want to shrink it to 400mb-700mb is there some program like that if there is please send me the link?

Well, then you will need to convert it to MP4.

I've tried many programs, but by far the best is "TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress".

What I do is, I use DVDShrink for ripping and then compress it with
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress.
(in DVD Shrink, make sure you chose the "re-author mode". In that mode you can select to only rip the movie without menu's and extra's.)

About
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress

A few things I must add.
First, after experimenting a lot, I recommend not to make the output file smaller than 1.5gb. Setting it smaller will introduce artifacts which are clearly visible on LCD screens.

Second, any video conversion program has quite a steep learning curve regarding to which settings work best.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is one of the easiest to use, but still you must expect to spend hours getting the right settings that suite you.

Experiment with only a selection of 1 minute of video, so the conversion goes fast.
Once you found the right settings you can save it as a template, so you won't have to do it all again.

Third, converting a 4.5gb movie to MP4 will take up a lot of time.
Of course this depends on your machine, but it will be around 1hr conversion for every 1hr of video. (and that is quite fast for shrinking a 4.5gb video to 1.5gb)

TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is optimized for multiple cores.

Oh, and it cost's $99 but considering it's features that is very cheap.

What you want is Handbrake. It's becoming the standard, and it's free and quite easy to use.

I'll second Handbrake. It's free and easy and is becoming the standard. It's the only app that I have continued using.

Don't hold me to this, but I think Handbrake is multi-threaded, so it flies on multi-core systems.

It's fast enough...I guess? Honestly, I haven't cared about speed so much...but output quality is what I do care about. I wouldn't say it is any slower than anything else I tried, but output quality is great on my .mkv files. A typical movie ends up being 1.1 to 1.4 GB, with DVD resolution, and 5.1 surround.

Thanks for the info.

I'll try it out.

Quality is my first priority, but speed is important to, since I am in the process of converting 200+ dvd's and 60 TV recordings.

TmpEnc 4 takes about 1hr per 1hr of video on my system, and it also makes the files between 1.1gb and 1.4gb, with DVD quality.

Longer than 2 hours per movie is not acceptable for me for obvious reasons.

Thanks again,

Greetz

For me, like you, quality is the top priority, so I won't put time limits on it, regardless of how many I have to do...and I'm looking at a similar number of DVDs as well. I could certainly see if one package took 5 hours while another took 2...I agree. But if Handbrake, for some reason, takes 15 minutes more, but outputs a superior quality....I'd consider that time well spent.

The time also depends highly on how Handbrake is configured, what type of hardware you are running, and what else you are doing with your computer at the time. If it sits idle, obviously, it will be much faster than if you are playing an intense game during the encoding. For me, I set it up to encode, queue up some tasks, and let it run overnight.

That is how I do it to.

With speed I don't mean a 15 minute difference but hrs.

I tried several programs that took 4hrs or more and couldn't utilize dual core, nor hardware acceleration.

TmpEnc 4 uses both multi cores and hardware acc.

But like I said I will try out this Handbrake and compare both quality and speed.
I have already bought TmpEnc, so you understand Handbrake will have to be better or faster or easier for me to make the switch.

That makes sense. That's how I'd test as well. I'd rip a movie with DVDfab, and use those files as my base...and then rip it with the same settings, using both apps.

+1 for handbrake

after playing about with it for most of today, i have to say it's fast and flexible and file-type friendly.

advantages over dvdfab:
  • it's free!
  • you can encode multiple audio streams

disadvantages:
  • it's not strictly a dvd ripper
  • it doesn't bypass any copy protection

still, it has a worthy place in my software arsenal, thanks DeaconFrost!

That's what I use DVDfab HD Decrypter for. I rip the files to my hard drive, unprotected, and then run them through Handbrake. This way, I'm not pulling from the disc directly, and I can queue up several movies at once.
